Youth Leadership Camp

CLARK- Four high school students from the San Isabel Electric Association, Inc. service area packed their bags and headed out of town as they attended the annual Colorado Electrical Education Institution Youth Leadership Camp the week of July 13.

Amanda Andrews of Holy Trinity Academy, Stephen Kimbrel of La Veta High School, Cody Mc Cullah of Rye High School and Corey Mc Ferren of Branson School were sponsored by San Isabel Electric to attend the camp.     SIEA Manager of Member Relations, Ashley Valdez also attended as assistant camp director.

Colorado Electric Cooperatives have sponsored and directed the educational seminar for over 30 years.  More than 80 students from Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wyoming gather at the Glen Eden Resort in Clark, Colorado to learn about electricity, cooperatives, transmission systems and political processes.  The resort is located 18 miles north of Steamboat Springs.

The primary objective of the camp is to provide an educational experience for young people on the organization and operation of electric cooperatives and to help develop leadership skills that will assist students with the challenges they face in the future.  Activities included idea exchange sessions, field trips, electrical demonstrations and legislative simulation role playing sessions.

Bill Wood, general manager of San Isabel Electric, states, “This is our 17th year to sponsor students from our area high schools.  It is a great opportunity for them to learn the cooperative business model and gain a greater understanding of how a rural electric cooperative operates and works for its members.”
