WALSENBURG — The Walsenburg Police Department has been investigating reported thefts from the RE-1 School District’s vehicle and maintenance facility.

Sometime during the overnight hours between September 16 -17, a 2002 Ford F-250 white crew cab pick up truck was stolen from the locked fenced area at the school’s bus garages. The lock to the fenced area was cut according to WPD Chief Tommie McLallen, but the vehicle has been recovered and is now in possession of the police department. The vehicle was found in Trinidad on September 17 and does not appear to have been damaged The truck may have been left in the locked fenced area with the keys in the ignition or somewhere inside the vehicle, as neither the steering column nor windows appeared to have been tampered with. The pick up truck is being processed for evidence before it is returned to the school district.

On September 8, police investigated a reported theft from the same facility when school officials reported to police that a number of miscellaneous tools and a green Crown Victoria sedan had been stolen. The vehicle is still missing and had, prior to being stolen, Colorado license plate EUS 265 attached.

Property stolen from an early September break in at the Huerfano Sports Complex adjacent to John Mall High School, has been recovered. That crime, believed to have been committed sometime over the first weekend of the month, saw thieves damage door locks, handles, doors, vents and framing as they gained access to the facility through the ventilation system. Thieves then gained access to the boy’s locker room and the concession stand area.

The stolen property was recovered by police at an abandoned home in the city, along with other property suspected to have been stolen in other local burglaries. Police anticipate additional charges and arrests associated with the other evidence found at that location.

Twenty-year old Tara Snider and 31-year old Rudy Martinez were arrested in connection with the sports complex break in and are being held at the Huerfano County Jail both with $45,000 c/s bonds. Anyone with information about these, or other open criminal cases, are urged to call the WPD at 719-738-1056 or Huerfano County 911 non-emergency line at 719-738-1044
