Wildfire thwarted

by Carol Stevens

GARDNER- Quick response from the Gardner Fire Department averted the unthinkable, when a trash fire quickly got out of control, Thurs. June 12, behind Garcia’s Ranch.  The homeowner started burning trash very early in the morning, when the winds were calm.  But as Huerfano County would have it, the winds picked up rapidly.  The wind quickly spread the fire out of the fire pit into nearby trees and brush.  The homeowner and a nearby neighbor attempted to keep the flames at bay with garden hoses until the fire department arrived.  Approximately one-third of an acre was burned, with no structures harmed.

Gardner volunteer firefighter Brian Sharp was first on the scene and acted quickly and professionally. Sharp immediately called for a pumper and brush truck.  Due to the remote location, firefighter Boe Stevens directed the pumper and brush truck to the area.  Gardner firefighters Sharp, Stevens, Ben and Diana Cupps and Morgan Alber quickly got a handle on the fire.  In less than an hour from the initial call, the fire was completely under control.

The homeowner was extremely grateful that the fire department showed up, and was very sorry for the incident.

When a red flag warning has been issued, such as this county has been under for quite some time, it is always a good idea to check with dispatch before burning anything.  To contact dispatch, call 738-1600.
