WALSENBURG — The Walsenburg Police Department, Huerfano County 911 Center and the Huerfano Ambulance Service all took part Tuesday afternoon in an active shooter drill at John Mall High School and Peakview School. While the training exercise did see evacuation of some high school students, the younger kids at Peakview were not involved in the evacuation portion of the exercise. Police Chief Tommie McLallen said with a number of officers available during the day shift on March 29, it was a good opportunity to get in some training. Chief McLallen stressed there is no pass or fail or winning or losing in this kind of training, it is all about perfecting skills and learning from mistakes in a training environment so, if there ever is a real active shooter incident officers and other first responders will have the skills and training necessary to meet any challenge.
