HCHS annual dinner and program features “Mountain Mafia”
WALSENBURG — Huerfano County Historical Society will host a presentation by the authors of “Mountain Mafia, Organized Crime in the Rocky Mountains”, Betty Alt and Sandra Will at their annual meeting Wednesday, October 2. The deadline to reserve dinner is Friday, September 27.
We are pleased that the authors have graciously accepted our invitation to speak at our annual meeting. It should be to be an interesting evening! Included in the $15 fee is a meal provided by Walsenburg Golf Club. Ap- petizer, spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread and drinks are included. Ordinary Elephant at Deerprint Wine
LA VEtA — Ordinary Elephant will perform Friday, September 27, 6 to 8 pm at Deerprint Wine, 106 E Francisco Street. This duo captivates audiences with their emotionally powerful and vulnerable songs, letting the listener know that they are not alone in this world. The collaboration of husband and wife Pete and Crystal Damore, their connection, and their influences (such as Gillian Welch, Guy Clark, Anais Mitchell) all meet on stage. “Two become one, in song…hand-in-glove harmonies surprise the listener with focused in- tensity and musical mastery,” says Mary Gauthier. Public Lands Celebration Day with La Veta Trails

Inner Idea Artist and a Fall Show
LA VEtA — The public is invited to the open- ing reception for two new art shows presented by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta. The reception is Saturday, September 28, 5 – 7 pm at SPACe, 132 W. Ryus, the Gallery in the Park. “Beauty Follows Truth” is the theme for a collection of works by the Inner Idea Artists, Peggy Zehring. Lana Thomas, Mary Sewell Cooper, Maggie MacIndoe, Marta Moore, Rena Kaplowitz, and David Zehring.
The Fall Show is a collection of original art by 10 area artists. Many small and larger paintings depicting autumn scenes are included. Russel Austin will provide his quiet and soothing music between 5 – 6 pm. There will be refreshments and there is no admission fee. The shows will be on display until November 9. United Church homemade pizza dinner
WALSENBURG — The community dinners begin again this Saturday, Sept. 28, at the United Church with homemade pizza dished up while local musicians perform. Included in the dinner will be salad, drinks, and a variety of homemade candies. Try out the candies and if you like them, there will be an opportunity to take a candy-making class later this fall.
The church dinners are not for fund raising but are for building community spirit and all are welcome. A donation is appreciated to cover the cost of the food. A colorful red, white, and green theme (the colors of Italy) will decorate the tables.
Dinner starts at 6 pm. The entrance is ac- ross the street from Loaf ‘n Jug at the red brick church on Main and Kansas.
Tri-City Trio at La Veta Mercantile

Ken Saydak, who moved to La Veta from Chicago, Illinois, has enjoyed a more than forty-year career as a musician, writer, vocalist, and producer. Sue Richards is an internationally known per- former, teacher, composer and author. Sue has recorded dozens of CDs, and has entertained audiences throughout the U.S. and Europe. Chris Newman – Guitar & Harp Duos Besides recording with Máire Ní Chathasaigh, Chris is a respected record-producer and arranger in the field of traditional and folk music and a composer. Among others, his composition “Fretwork” (from his solo album of that name) has been used as the signature tune for BBC Radio Wales’s weekly “Celtic Heartbeat” program for a number of years, and was used for an advertisement on Sky TV for four years. Chris has just been named “Male Musician of the Year” in the 2019 Live Ireland Awards.
Máire Ní Chathasaigh – Irish Harp
Máire Ní Chathasaigh (pronounced Moira Nee Ha-ha-sig) is “the doyenne of Irish harp players” (The Scotsman), “the great innovator of modern Irish harping, a player of outstand- ing technique and imagination” (The Rough Guide to Irish Music) and one of Ireland’s most important and influential traditional musicians. She was described by the late Derek Bell as “the most interesting and original player of the Irish harp today” and is the sole harper recipient to date of Irish music’s most prestigious award, Gradam Ceoil TG4 – Irish Traditional Musician of the Year.

SCCOG Early Learning Center preschool openings
WALSENBURG — The SCCOG Early Learn- ing Center just received four more slots for the Colorado Preschool Program which means we have four new openings for children that may qualify for CPP funds. Children must three years of age or older by November 1st and have the CPP’s qualifying factors to be eligible. If eligible, children may attend the center free of charge from 9 am to 12 pm. Child care services are available before 9 am and after 12 pm if desired. The Early Learning Center is a Colorado Shines Four-Star rated program with licensed staff teaching the Creative Curriculum and evaluating children with the TSGold program. Interested parents should drop by the Center at 100 West Spruce Street in the mornings Monday-Thursdays and see if this program fits their needs.

HUERFANO COUNty — Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is pleased to announce the upcoming 2019 Health Fair Blood Draws. This year’s theme is “Stay Strong, Live Long”.
Blood draws will be held tuesday, October 1, 7 to 10 am at Gardner School; Wednesday, October 9, 7 to 10 am at La Veta Clinic; Friday, October 11, 7 to 10 am at Spanish Peaks Ambulance Garage. Join the Fun on Walk or Wheel Wednesday
LA VEtA — The La Veta Elementary and Middle Schools will join schools around the country to celebrate National Walk to School Day on October 2nd. Approximately 100 students from the schools will be walking or biking to school.
Parents will need to drop off their children at the La Veta Town Hall (at the park) be- tween 7:00-7:15 a.m. Community volunteers will escort the walking students in “Walking School Buses” and the biking students in “Bi- cycle Trains” along Main St. Parents are welcome. Walkers and bicyclists will arrive at the school by 7:30 a.m. All students and escorts on wheels must wear a bike helmet.
Walk or Wheel Wednesday raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for walk- ing and bicycling and emphasizes the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events help build more connections between families, schools and the broader community.

LA VEtA — Fall is in the air and that means that La Veta Oktoberfest is right around the corner. If you haven’t had a chance to attend La Veta’s Oktoberfest, what are you waiting for? Held on the first Saturday of every October, this incredible day includes a car show, German band, dancing in the street all day long, over 60 arts, crafts, and food vendors, a Veteran’s tribute, and a German Biergarten. This year Oktoberfest is Saturday, October 5!
The year makes the 33rd year that the celebration that began as last hurrah to say goodbye to summer has been happening. It has grown to wonderful event where people come from far and wide to meet up with old friends and make new ones. La Veta is cool and colorful this time of year and it is a prefect time to have some fun in the Budweiser sponsored bier garden and do a little dancing in the streets! This year we are proud to have back with us the Alan Polivka German Band to start off the day and the highly acclaimed Slope Side band out of Denver playing rock and roll and oldies in the afternoon. There will be a live DJ all day to keep things moving and to present prizes from the raffle drawings. The morning will start off with the Color Guards and a moving Veteran’s celebration and a 1:00 a new Oktoberfest King and Queen will be crowned. You can also enjoy the high stepping el Fandango Dancers. You won’t want to miss the largest car how in Southern Colorado hosted by the Twin Peaks Rodders with an amazing assortment of vintage and hot rod cars. All day long there will be amazing food and crafts from over 80 vendors offering a wonderful variety of tasty treats and exciting arts and craft items. This is a free event and all of the proceeds go to provide scholarships to Huerfano County students and to help the less fortunate in our communities. Vendors invited to November Quilt and Craft show
WALSENBURG — We would like to invite vendors to participate in our 2nd annual Quilt and Craft Show November 2, 2019! The show will be held in Delaney Hall, behind St. Mary Catholic Church, 121 E. 7th Street.
We are asking $25 for a 6 foot table, or $30 for an 8 foot table, which could be shared by 2 vendors. Please indicate if you need extra floor space.

We hope to have more vendors than we had last year, so plan to get your registration in as soon as you can. The Scrappy Ladies Quilt Club has generously offered the use of their quilt stands, so our quilt display will be much better, and will take up less room. Please attach a story about your quilt, pattern, etc.
The show will last from 9 am until 3 pm on Saturday, November 2. The hall will open at 7 am that morning for set up. If you feel you need more time than that, please indicate that on your registration form.

2nd Annual Boncarbo Poker Run
BONCARBO — The 2nd Annual Boncarbo Poker Run, hosted by Boncarbo VFD Auxiliary and firefighters, will take place on Saturday, September 28, from 9 am to 6 pm. There will be two runs- the first by motorcycle or car, driving the Highway of Legends. The second run is off-road, through Spanish Peaks Country, to Ludlow and Gulnare Inn. ATVs must have a spark arrester.
Registration is from 9-11 am, runs leave 10-11:30. The event begins and ends at the Boncarbo VFD 14589 CR 57.7. Last hand starts at 4 pm. Riders are $25, additional hands are $15 each. Historic Window Workshop
tRINIDAD — Saturday, September 28, 10 am to 12:30 pm enjoy a day with the Director of the Rocky Mountain Preservation Center at Trinidad History Museum, 120 S Chestnut Street. Participants will have hands on time with glazing putty and tools used to apply glazing, glass and how to measure/in- stall, as well as a run through about how to remove/re-install windows. We’ll do a quick bit about window terminology, so they understand more about the parts of a window. Participants will also get two hours of the director’s time to pick his brain about windows. Tai Chi at Mt. Carmel
tRINIDAD — Classes will take place every Monday and Wednesday beginning September 23 and concluding on October 30 at Mt. Carmel Wellness & Community Center, 911 Robinson Avenue. Tai Chi is a terrific exercise for everyone. It is gentle and can quickly improve balance, core strength, circulation, flexibility at the same time decrease stress levels and increase life vibrancy and joy.

Colfax Rapid Response open house
RAtON — Colfax County Rapid Response would like to invite the public to join them Saturday, September 28, 11 am to 4 pm for an open house to show off their new station, 9 South Pond Lane, take HWY 72 east toward Lake Maloya we are on the left hand side, if you make it to Potato Mountain Road turn around you have gone too far.
At the open house you can climb on our new equipment and meet the members in person who volunteer to respond to the emergencies of our community. For those who would like to experience what it’s like to be a firefighter, you can participate in some drills in full turn out gear. They will have door prices, food vendors, local vendors and games for the kids. Door prizes provided by various donations from local businesses. You must be present to win. If there is enough interest they will have a 50/50 horseshoe tournament. The buy in per team will be $20.
Colfax County Rapid Response would also like to challenge other agencies whether you’re law enforcement, fire fighter, corrections officer, or dispatcher to a Battle Of The Badges Horseshoe Tournament. This will be for bragging rights and no entry fee will be collected.

Fall Festival—Fiesta Otoño

Car seat inspection at Fiesta Otoño
SpRINGER — Come and have your child’s car seat or booster seat inspected for recalls, broken parts, improper installation, and appropriateness for your child for free at the 3rd Annual Fiesta Otono, 3rd Street and Cimarron Ave. in Springer. Capulin Astronomy Nights
CApULIN — Come join Capulin Astronomy Rangers for our summer series of astronomy nights, Saturday, September 28, 7:30 pm. View planets, our moon, galaxies and more through giant telescopes under some of the darkest skies in the lower 48. Times vary by month, but all observing will be done in the outdoor classroom area West of the Visitor Center. Please wear warm clothing and leave the pets at home. Bring flashlights to get to and from parking, but keep them put away at the telescopes.
