Leave no trace and Dutch oven cooking at Lathrop this weekend
WALSENBURG — Friday, June 14, 7 pm at the Piñon Camp-ground Amphitheater, Lathrop’s park naturalist will conduct a family program on the Leave No Trace principles. The program includes fun demonstrations, and children who participate can earn a Junior Ranger badge.
Saturday, June 15, 7 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater, interpreter Keri Powers will present Campfire Cooking with a Dutch Oven. Powers will teach about Dutch ovens, and do a cooking demonstration. Plus, attendees will get to taste Keri’s delicious dump cobbler.
As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week. Lathrop State Park is located on Hwy 160, approximately three miles west of Walsenburg.

This class, taught by instructor Ruth Heal, shows students ways of expressing themselves using words, color, images, and collage. Western Rendezvous Opening Reception at SPACe

West Peak Treeline Hike
CUCHARA — Cuchara Recreation will do the West Peak Treeline Hike Monday, June 24, 9:30 am to 3 pm. All hikes meet at the Cuchara Community Center, 16500 CO 12. Bring lunch, rain gear, and appropriate shoes. After meeting up at the Recreation Center, we “circle up” at the parking lot of Cordova Pass (formerly Apishapa Pass). We start by following the West Peak trail head. The first part of the trail is mostly flat and is an easy walk in fact, it is a wheel chair accessible trail. After our easy part of the hike, we start doing some climbing. This is done with relative ease, as the trail is filled with switch- backs and we rest often. It is a rewarding climb and a doable hike for people and dogs of all ages. There are some great lookout points along the trail which are a great opportunity to get some pictures of the valley. On our way up we stop and visit an old mine which is a big hit with the kids. Our lunch spot is at the tree line where there is a great panoramic, breathtaking view. You can see volcanos of New Mexico, Trinidad, CO, Blanca Peak near Alamosa, Pikes Peak and the Cuchara River Valley. This is the same hike that we use for our Full Moon hike. In this documentary, we are introduced to an unusual Camino de Santiago pilgrim, Sven. While most of the pilgrims who take on the challenging Camino de Santiago are able-bodied and devoid of any noticeable disabilities, Sven lacks both sight and hearing. He has been dreaming about the journey for a lifetime, and it gets to a point where he simply has to go for it. Unable to do it alone, he turns to those around him for support, and the unerring nature of human kindness shows itself when he is afforded the company of handy assistants.
This is not your typica hero’s journey. This year’s RMSS will be Wednesday, June 26 through Sunday, June 30. Held every summer, RMSS has been one of the nation’s premier star parties for the last 30 years. Located on 35 acres of land, RMSS’s “Starry Meadows” is conveniently located just over two hours southwest of Colorado Springs (just outside of Gardner, CO), between the Sangre de Cristo and Wet mountain ranges, at an altitude of 7,612 feet above sea level. Learn basic Navajo weaving
LA VETA — Francisco Fort Museum and Huajatolla Heritage Foundation are offering two weaving classes. Caroline Spurgeon, creator of the much-acclaimed miniature Navajo loom will be teaching a Twining class on Friday, June 28 (a great introduction to Navajo Weaving.) It is a complete class with a finished project at the end of the day, plus the primitive loom that will be yours to take home.
Then Caroline will teach a traditional beginning Navajo weaving class on Saturday and Sunday, June 29 and 30 on the miniature C-Cactus Flower Loom. All the learning techniques are transferable to using a full-size loom if you continue a pas- sion for Navajo weaving. Class size is limited to 8 students! Looms will be provided for use during the class and/or purchase later. All other supplies provided. Advanced registration is required. Classes will be held in La Veta at Francisco Fort Museum. La Veta Gallery reception for watercolor artist Lorraine Watry
LA VETA — The La Veta Gallery on Main is excited to present a showing of the work of renowned watercolor artist, Lorraine Watry. The opening meet-the-artist reception will be Saturday, June 28, 5-8 pm, at the Gallery, 210 S. Main. The show will run through July 23.
Lorraine Watry is a Colorado contemporary realist painter of water-scapes, landscapes, and reflective objects. Lorraine illuminates qualities that often go unnoticed by the casual ob- server and her art is characterized by bright colors, dramatic light and realistic reflections. Lorraine likes the challenge of painting reflections in water and glass and while helping with her son’s high school band she became intrigued with reflections in band instruments.
Lorraine has a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Colorado in Boulder with an emphasis in drawing. After college, she designed clip art at a graphics company for several years. Lorraine began working with watercolor 25 years ago. She taught watercolor at Pikes Peak Community College for 3 years. Lorraine currently teaches watercolor and drawing to classes at her studio and at other venues. Lorraine enjoys pass- ing on her love of the watercolor medium to her students.
Lorraine has achieved Signature Status in the National Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain National Watercolor Society, Colorado Watercolor Society and the Pikes Peak Water- color Society and has paintings juried into many National and International Exhibitions.
Lorraine was recently filmed as a featured artist by “Colour in Your Life” an Australian art TV show. The show aired Nov. 22, 2018 on Youtube & will be sent to over 300 channels around the world.

History presentation at the Carnegie
TRINIDAD — Phillip Arnold Vigil was born in the Purgatoire River valley, San Juan Plaza, Segundo. He lived in many other places during his growing-up and adult years, but he never forgot his Las Animas County roots. In fact, in recent years he has become an important local historian. He has written a number of books covering various subjects concerning the history of the local area, and has generously donated his books to the Library’s History Room.
Vigil’s recent book, History of Education in Las Animas County 1866-1966, is a great addition to his work. Phillip will be at the Library today, Thursday, June 13, 9:30 to 10:30 am. Come and meet Phillip, talk with him about local history, and buy a copy of his new book. I hope to see you there!

Tourism Board 2019 Grant Cycle Announced
TRINIDAD — The City of Trinidad Tourism Board is pleased to announce it is now accepting Grant Applications for the June Cycle of the 2019 Grant funding to be used exclusively for advertising and marketing of tourism events that serve the Trinidad area.
The City of Trinidad Tourism Board is committed to supporting and investing in organizations that provide events which align with the mission of the Tourism Board – marketing for the sustainable development of the industry, an enhanced visitor experience, and an improved quality of life for our residents.
Funding is granted through a competitive application process in four (4) grant cycles annually. Grant cycles begin on March 1, June 1, Sept. 1, and Nov. 1, 2019 and will close on the last day of the respective month at which time no applications for that grant cycle will be accepted.
An organization may submit multiple applications for separate programs/events, however, any funded program/event may receive only one grant per year which runs from March 1, 2019 until December 31, 2019.

Kids Grief Counseling Camp
TRINIDAD — Sangre de Cristo Hospice is offering a grief counseling camp for children Friday, June 14, 9 am to 5 pm at Trinidad Community Center, 1309 Beshoar Drive. TRINIDAD — Greg Sund, President of the Trinidad Rotary Club, announced this week that the Trinidad Rotary Club has scheduled its annual Golf Tournament—Fundraiser at the Trinidad Municipal Golf Course on Friday afternoon, June 14. In announcing the event, Sund said “We are raising funds to help pay for the Illustrated Scholastic Children’s Dictionary distributed to all third grade students in Las Animas County. This is the 16th consecutive year the Trinidad Rotary Club has participated in the dictionary handout”.
There are approximately 170 third grade students attending the various public and private schools in the county. A dictionary is personally handed to each student by a member of the Rotary Club each year during the month of December, as a personal gift intended to help in the development of literacy skills.

Leather carving for beginners
TRINIDAD — A five-day leather carving course will be offered through TSJC’s Continuing Education (no college credit) program Monday, June 17 – Friday, June 21. In this beginners’ course, students will learn to build skills and refine techniques in the art of leather carving. Emphasis will be placed on the traditional methods to carve Sheridan style patterns. At the beginning of the class, students will practice on a variety of test swatches and then advance to the main project of their choice.

Guns and Gunsmithing in fiction writing workshop
TRINIDAD — A continuing education class (not for college credit) at TSJC on novel writ- ing and guns will be held Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28, 8 am to 5 pm. Topics include how to edit productively, how to schedule your writing day, how to choose a publisher, how to deal with editors and agents, and understanding of basic concepts like plot, pace, research, character development, and much more.
Attendees will also learn how to include their favorite guns and their performance in fiction writing. Essentially a novel writing workshop with special emphasis on shooting sports as they are portrayed in fiction. Students will be expected to write each day, with in-class critiques. Please bring your own dinnerware and camp gear in addition to items needed on the trail: sturdy boots, long pants, work gloves, LUNCH, sunglasses, sunblock, and plenty to drink. Growing Great Kids to raffle historic postcards
RATON — The $5 raffle tickets will be sold throughout the summer. Checks should be made out to GrowRaton!, with “GGK raffle” included on the memo line.
The framed postcards will be displayed at various locations starting Monday, June 3 at FNB New Mexico bank, 1104 South 2nd St. The drawing will be Thursday, Sept. 5. “These four beautiful postcards include great images from Raton’s earlier days,” said Patricia Walsh, a member of Growing Great Kids. “One of them appears to be a color-tinted photograph that includes the railroad roundhouse, which doesn’t exist anymore.”
The postcards were donated to Growing Great Kids by Kim Straus, outgoing director of the charitable Brindle Foundation of Santa Fe. The Brindle Foundation has granted $6,000 to Growing Great Kids since 2018. GGK is the outgrowth of a 2015 early childhood development series presented by the University of New Mexico Family Development Program. This intergenerational downtown Walsenburg beautification program is designed for volunteer adults, senior citizens, and local children to work hand in hand to design, build and decorate planter boxes. Art for Kids-ya gotta have art
LA VETA — The SPACe 2019 Youth Art Workshop in La Veta is the week of July 8-12, 9 am to noon each day for children who have completed Kindergarten to those entering 6th grade. All materials are provided.
Children entering 1st – 3rd grades will spend the week exploring and creating art. This five day workshop, held at the La Veta School of the Arts, will include two amazing projects. Kids will work with clay on a Fossil and Container project, which includes research looking at fossils, and drawing before working in clay. The second project includes creating Japanese Paste paper, making dynamic patterns and textures. The children will also be learning about symmetry, drawing and collage-the art of using a variety of papers and gluing them to a surface. This project allows them to explore the insect world while choosing an image for their collages. Inspiration for this project comes from the artist and author Eric Carl.
Patti Paiz Jones will be the instructor for the 1st – 3rd grade children. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado in art education and brings 36 years’ experience teaching art to grades 1 – 12.
Young people entering 4th – 6th grades will learn how to create their own video games, under the direction of Rachael Schneider. The workshop will be held at the La Veta High School Media Center, with devices provided by the school. Rachael received a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree with a focus in electronic art, and a minor in technical theater from Colorado State University.

WALSENBURG — SCCY offers year round youth programs for kids 8 to 18 in Huerfano County. The summer schedule is: Mondays is Youth Trek day— Younger kids 8 to 12 will experience the outdoors by going on small hikes, fishing, and playing outdoor games 10 am to 2 pm. Older youth 13 to 19 will go on overnight camping trips, climb mountains, hike class 2 trails and complete a service project at Mission Wolf. Older kids meet at 10 am.
Tuesday is the Roots Garden program, 2 to 4 pm for all age groups.
Wednesdays are for gaming and hanging out, 10 am to 2 pm for all age groups.
Thursdays-STEM related learning classes and the Dungeons and Dragons club meets at 1 to 3 pm.

HOH: Camp! Colorado Week
TRINIDAD — The popular Hands on History program returns to Trinidad History Museum each week Monday -Friday, 9 am to 3 pm with different topics covered each week.
Lunch, snacks, and all the supplies are included. Weather pending, students will spend at least an hour outside. Please ensure your children bring close-toed shoes with them. THM will provide sunscreen and bug spray, but if there is a specific brand that your child needs, you will be responsible for providing it.
This camp is open to students in grades 1- 8 at the cost of $85/week. However, there are a number of discounts available for THM and History Colorado Members, families enrolling multiple children, and paying tuition in full be- fore the start of camp. We also have scholar- ships based on household size and income.
