Track Mid-Season State Rankings

by David Tesitor

HUERFANO, LAS ANIMAS COUNTIES – As the season begins to wind down and the weather is cooperating, look for these positions to change over the remaining two weeks before state begins. At the John Mall “May the Fourth Be With You” tournament this Saturday, teams from Hoehne, La Veta, Primero, Trinidad, and Walsenburg compete against one another, along with twenty other teams. This is a chance for one final push in the bid for state. Kim will be at the Tri-League Meet. This will also be one final chance for the Trinidad Miners to have any chance of qualifying members of their team for state since they missed the High Altitude Challenge last week in Alamosa.

Many records were broken last weekend. The changes became apparent as the gap between the last qualifying spot greatly shrank, eliminating previously ranked players from state. Of note to local athletes, two examples came in the triple jump as Nya Scacca of La Veta dropped from 12th to 19th when several other athletes from across 1A presented better jumps, including Sidney Goode from Kim who had her personal best leap at the Springfield Invitational, 31 feet-1.50 inches, one inch ahead of the last spot. Another example was in the woman’s shot put where Katelyn Lowe of Hoehne, who was 15th last week, dropped to 22nd even with her throw of 32 feet. Several locals had their personal best times (see related stories). Of particular note, the Hoehne hurdlers placed fourth in the top 18 in the 110M as Gavin Baker broke the top 18 in the 110 and 200M hurdles. As in prior weeks, changes in times and positions are indicated with an *. Results are based on the wind qualified times.
