Walsenburg

1868: Died, Kittie, 13, daughter of John W. and Hettie Brown, at their home near the Fort Union crossing in Huerfano County.
1876: Messrs. Walsen and Levy have obtained a business license to operate a saloon and store in La Veta.
1881: Messrs. Walsen and Levy received last week $1,000 in one and two dollar bills for the benefit of their customers who want their change in small bills.
1889: Charles Mazzone has opened up a first class oyster parlor under the Opera House, side entrance. Special accommodations for ladies and families. Entirely separate from the bar.
1897: Julian Lamme was injured when his horse stumbled as he was coming in to school from his home in Pictou.
1903: Mother Jones, the strike agitator, addressed a crowded house at Mazzone’s Hall last Wednesday evening.
1911: See our new lines of furniture and household goods at Walsenburg Furnishings Co., one door north of Baxter Hardware and Trading Co., Main Street.
1917: Mrs. Chauncy Summers and infant son Dan are home from the hospital in Pueblo.
1925: More than 2,000 people attended the open house marking the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Walsenburg Creamery.
1934: About 400 attended the meeting Sunday afternoon to hear Neal Crook, international board member of the United Mine Workers of America, speak at Kopusin Hall.
1942: In support of the war effort, Huerfano County citizens have to date turned in some 250 pounds of old keys to be converted at the brass foundry for processing.
1949: Emma Cornali, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cornali of the Major Coal Company at Sunnyside and nurse at Corwin Hospital, was diagnosed as a victim of infantile paralysis in Pueblo this week.
1957: With so much vandalism lately, Chief of Police Jack Evans and officers will strictly enforce the eight o’clock curfew.
1964: US Rep. J. Edgar Chenowith was in Walsenburg on Tuesday as a guest of the Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce.
1970: Calumet No. 2 with 13 miners produced 973 tons of coal in 22 days and Maitland No. 2 with seven men produced 822 tons in 20 days.
1977: Jay D. Crook, publisher, was charged with disturbance after a verbal encounter with a woman at the drive-up mail box at Russell and East Sixth streets.
1985: Property owners in Navajo Ranch will meet tomorrow evening in the water district office to begin the process for the organization of a homeowners association.
1992: Walsenburg youth will tonight celebrate Halloween at the Haunted Houses in the Walsenburg Care Center, John Mall High School and Youth Center Theatre, followed by a dance in the high school.

La Veta

1876: Until lately, miners seem to have thought this no place for them, however good it might be for flocks and farming, but a few months ago some miners prospected the west one of the two Spanish Peaks and now, besides the many placer claims, some fifteen lodes have been located.
1882: William Clark, while engaged driving a crosscut in the Whale Mine with two shifts of men, developed a four foot vein of silver ore that will assay about 30 ounces.
1888: John Otsen was appointed to town board to replace E.E. Shafer, who quit, and the board will now contemplate the bids received for the sidewalk contract in anticipation of a decision at the Nov. 19 meeting.
1896: The Honorable Alva Adams will address the voters of La Veta in Ryus Hall Saturday evening. Turn out and give the gentleman a full house.
1903: C.L. Martin’s new hay barn on the north side of town near the slaughterhouse burned down at a loss of $1,500.
1910: The school board in the Baker District on Middle Creek have concluded to move the school house to Oakview for nearly all the children in the district live in that camp.
1918: Mrs. H.L. Springer is desirous of selling a Reo Roadster with a truck body.
1924: An old time wind storm occurred Wednesday which demolished automobile tops, blew down trees and was generally obnoxious.
1932: Ellis Smith has been chosen the Colorado state winner in the national 4-H Meat Animal Livestock Project Contest and won a $50 gold watch.
1938: Whiskey Creek Pass is to be completed by 1940 by the Works Progress Administration which will work three shifts all winter on the tunnel.
1945: Margaret Cruz is the only high school senior to be on the honor roll and have perfect attendance for the first six weeks.
1952: Homecoming Queen Marie Kreutzer had as her attendants Joyce Matteo, senior, Sharron Jones, junior, Henrietta Duzenack, sophomore and Margaret Downs, freshman.
1958: Elected to the high school student council were Judy Geiser, president, Jerry Geiser, vice president, Marie Galvan, secretary and Dick Masinton, treasurer.
1963: Receiving all As in grades 8 through 12 were Karen Kmetz, Teresa Gordon, Kenneth Arnold, Donna Disert and Johnny Huffman.
1969: Master Sergeant Odis J. Huesties is a member of a unit that earned the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit award. He is a La Veta High School graduate.
1976: The historic Peterson ranch was sold by August and Clara Peterson to Dick and Shirley Jameson who will build a new home so the Petersons may stay in the old. The property includes two plats patented to Henry Mack and Elias Coleman in the 1890s and sold to Fred Peterson in 1914, who added several more parcels later.
1983: Cuchara Valley Resort has applied for a liquor license for its new restaurant.
1990: The Grandote Golf and Country Club Championship, postponed from last weekend because of the snowstorm, will be this Saturday.
