1871: The election Oct. 23 for the location of the county seat resulted in Badito retaining that honor for at least another year.
1880: County Surveyor John F. Read was elected county judge in Tuesday’s election over Antonio De La Riva, Republican, 516-462. He succeeds John W. Henry. The Democrats swept the election in Huerfano County.
1889: A Young Men’s Democratic Club was organized Tuesday with George Kearns, president and Dave Wycoff, secretary.
1896: Juan de Dios Montez was elected to the state legislature in Tuesday’s election and E.A. Lewis defeated Dr. Thomas Grantham to become county commissioner for this district.
1904: The band boys sheet and pillow case dance on Hallowe’en night was enjoyed by a good crowd.
1910: Fred Klein has moved part of his Christmas and holiday goods to the Stephens’ old stand across the street from his “Palace of Sweets”.
1916: The Maccabees will present their minstrel show – Marvelous Melange of Mirth and Melody – Nov. 8 and 9 in the Owl Theatre.
1923: Prohibition officers have been busy this week bringing in violators of the alcohol and gambling laws.
1930: The Alamo soccer team beat Morley 2-1 and the Calumet Indians of Delcarbon will meet the Sugarite team of New Mexico on Sunday.
1936: Undersheriff Carl Swift is searching for two truckers who stole between 12 and 15 tons of coal from the Blackhills mine.
1943: Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rogers will observe their 50th wedding anniversary tomorrow at home at 351 E. Fifth, having married Nov. 8, 1893 on the Santa Clara. Five of their seven children survive.
1950: The Dixieland Minstrels of the Lions Club put on an excellent show last night.
1956: A fellow isn’t really getting old until he feels his corns more than his oats.
1962: A plate glass window at Gritz Jewelry, 513 Main Street, was broken Tuesday night and about six wristwatches were taken.
1967: On Nov. 11 all stores will be closed for Veterans Day, there will be patriotic programs at Walsenburg High School at 10:45 a.m. and at the courthouse at 11 a.m. The parade at 1 p.m. will feature no less than three bands.
1973: Evalyn James Bailey, special education coordinator and consultant for School District Re-1, has been named to the Outstanding Teachers of America for 1973.
1980: John Mall High School U.S. History and Law class held a mock election in which Jimmy Carter received 144 votes and Ronald Reagan, 123.
1986: City Council adopted a three quarter million dollar budget based on a 17.6 mill levy by cutting funding to the library, ambulance, jail, Walsenburg Golf Course and the fire department.
1993: Youth Center Theatre proudly announces a performance of the Creede Repertory Theater in Walsenburg Nov. 8 with “Greater Tuna,” a satire on small town life set in Tuna, Texas.
La Veta
1877: The town board should collect the money the county owes for using La Veta’s calaboose for their prisoners.
1883: The coal business is booming. Harrison and Hudspeth have found it necessary to add another ox train to supply their increasing orders.
1890: Dr. J.H. Morton charged the town $22.00 for his calls on the pauper Charles Boehme, and another $14.00 was asked for Boehme’s board and room for two weeks.
1897: Next Friday week, the popular and accomplished Ma Sweet and her family of seven daughters will give a select entertainment in the Presbyterian church, followed by dinner by the Ladies Aid and Christian Endeavor societies.
1903: Mr. Fey is finishing up the four room cottage for Mr. and Mrs. James Nuttall, one of the prettiest houses in town.
1909: The new stalls at the roundhouse are almost completed and the new concrete water tank will soon be ready to supply the engines.
1915: The Oakview First Aid Team, trained by Dr. S. Julian Lamme, won the tri-state championship for Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.
1922: The crazy Hallowe’en custom of tearing things up was much in evidence Wednesday morning with junk all over the streets and sidewalks.
1929: Frank Kato has closed the Vienna Café and is seeking another location. Mrs. Dora Bruce has taken over management, assisted by Mrs. William Kissell.
1935: Eleven women are already employed by the local relief sewing project that just started in La Veta.
1941: La Veta tied Huerfano County High School 7-7 with Sonny Prator scoring the touchdown and Elbert Kitchen scoring the extra point.
1947: The first snowstorm of the season began two days ago and is still going. Last year at this time we had had about five feet.
1953: The Redskins, as winners of the Las Animas League, will host Manitou Springs tomorrow for the Class C division playoff.
1958: Curtis Goemmer was elected president of the 4-H Electric Club, Fred Scholes, vice president, Carl Drum, secretary and Janet Pene, treasurer.
1965: Twenty five or 30 junior and senior high school students attended a Halloween party at the Mountain View Baptist Church. Larry Thompson won the door prize and Gary Bailey the booby prize.
1972: Cuchara received a foot of snow in the two-day storm, bringing its season total to 44 inches.
1978: Town Board has adopted a $74,025 budget for 1979, up from $36,703 in 1978, not including water and utility expenses.
1984: The Junior High Knowledge Bowl team of JoEllen Murphy, Stephanie Noyes, Dan Vietti, Kevin Pochardt and T.J. Verquer won first at a contest against seven other teams.
