Walsenburg

1892: Merchants of Rouse are D.R. Hindman, groceries, E.L. Duncan, meat market, Matthew Kerr, Vienna Bakery and ice cream parlor, and Thomas Good, proprietor of the Commercial Hotel on Main Street.
1898: Mrs. Eva C. Higgins was elected president of the new Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle.
1905: The directors of the Walsenburg District #4 School Board will have a special election for issuance of $10,000 in bonds for a new school building. The present building is totally inadequate with from 50 to 75 students in each classroom, which has forced the board to rent the Pythian Hall for the past three years.
1911: A. Martinez is proprietor of the California restaurant, now located at 116 Seventh Street.
1917: Raymond Howard Jones, 18, was killed in an accident in the Walsen mine.
1923: Walter Zinko, 39, died of the injuries he incurred in a fall of rock in the Robinson No. 2 mine.
1929: The new Huerfano County High School athletic field will be dedicated tomorrow, Nov. 15, and afterward the Panthers will face the Aguilar eleven, a tough team whose players average 160 pounds.
1935: More than 400 men are now working on Public Works Administration projects in the county, leaving about 700 unemployed still to be placed.
1941: The county budget for 1942 calls for 25.633 mills, to raise a total of $226,468.73. This is 4.82 mills lower than last year.
1947: According to County Commissioner Clyde M. Johnson, a site on a school section three miles north of Walsenburg just off Highway 85-87 is being inspected for a possible airport.
1953: Walsenburg and La Veta Rotary Club members and their wives will have their dinner meeting Tuesday evening in the Hotel Kirkpatrick when Shirley Krier will discuss her recent Hawaiian trip with Alma Andreatta.
1959: After racking up eight straight victories, the St. Mary Crusaders ended their season undefeated by finishing with a 13-13 tie with Sargent.
1965: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lenzini, now of Littleton, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary here Saturday in Shosky’s banquet room with a reception hosted by their children Leona Zupancic, Elvira Amidei, Dorothy Woodruff and Albert Lenzini Jr.
1972: Eight inches of snow blanketed Walsenburg in the second major storm of the season, bringing total snowfall since Sept. 1 to 23 inches. Moisture content of 3.39 inches brought the year’s total to 11.71 inches, or about three inches less than normal.
1978: A Texas corporation announced it will open Spanish Peaks Exotic Game Ranch on 160 acres west of Rio Cucharas Country Club with wild animals from the entire world to hunt.
1984: The county commissioners Wednesday signed a 20-year lease for the county owned building at Fifth and Main streets to become a mining museum.

La Veta

1882: The Mountain Monarch Mining Company received on Monday a new steam drill to use on their tunnel on the West Spanish Peak, also a new 24 horse power engine and 25 horse power boiler said to cost between $3,500 and $4,000.
1895: The outlook for the local coal mines west of La Veta is better than ever before. A large amount of coal is being prepared for shipment to Alamosa, Creede and other towns west of the range.
1901: Harry Lawton has been buying up wheat in the San Luis Valley and running the mill in La Veta day and night when sufficient water can be obtained for power.
1907: Forest Ranger Asa Arnold will undertake extermination of all predatory animals in the Las Animas Forest Reserve.
1913: Dr. S. Julian Lamme went to Trinidad and returned in his machine in three hours and one minute. That’s goin’ some.
1919: Work on the new coal chutes in the railroad yards is progressing smoothly and they will probably be done about the 15th of the month.
1925: People who came out of the mountains Saturday reported 26 inches of snow on top of the existing two feet, and it took John Todd six hours to travel the seven miles to town from his ranch on Bear Creek in the deep snow.
1931: Several hundred students and citizens attended the fine Armistice Day program at the school this week.
1937: Highway 111, now routed along La Veta’s main street, should be oiled.
1943: Mike Judiscak is displaying an interesting collection of souvenirs he brought home from the Solomon Islands in the Pacific.
1949: The school bond issue to be voted on in the Nov. 28 election will allow the construction of a building north of the present high school with four classrooms, home economic facilities, a hot lunch room and auditorium.
1955: The cease fire on hunting season found 25 more local residents bagging deer, including Margie Keeling, Gladys Warren, Mable Duzenack and Mrs. Hazel Rickards.
1961: A pink and blue shower was given in honor of Mrs. Robert Erwin at the home of Mrs. Jennie Yokum.
1967: Spanish Peaks Garden Club will decorate Main Street with evergreen boughs and lights, and, after the holidays, will collect discarded Christmas trees and place them in arroyos to prevent erosion.
1973: Ruth’s Beauty Shop has moved from the La Veta Lodge to Main Street to make way for a new ski and sport shop adjacent to the hotel lobby.
1979: Huerfano School District Re-2 Board certified a mill levy of 49.15 mills to raise $295,544.54 for the general fund budget for 1980.
1985: Baker Creek Restaurant at Cuchara Valley Resort reopens this week under general manager Grady Jean Clark. Lunch will be served from Monday through Sunday, and dinner from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
