The return of the staffers to Philmont

Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 2.26.00 PMIt may not be as famous as the return of the swallows to Capistrano, but Raton watches for the return of the Boy Scouts to the area each year.

Yes, scouting season is here. Staff members from all over the nation have begun to arrive by AMTRAC to be taken to camp to get ready for the thousands of Boy Scouts who will be soon arriving.

Philmont Scout Ranch was begun on lands that were originally part of the Mexican land grant of 1841. Waite Philips, an oilman, wanted all boys to be able to experience the wilderness through scouting and gave over 125,000 acres to start a camp.

This is another way that our beautiful state helps to improve the lives of young people. Photo by Kenny J. Cruz.
