La Veta track shows well at swink Headley Meet
by David High
SWINK — The lovely town of Swink, Colorado, out on the western edge of the Great American Desert, was the inspirational site for Monday’s Ray Headley Invitational Track Meet.  The La Veta Redskin cinder-stompers’ were present to hone their skills along with a stadium full of 32 other schools competing on the best day weather-wise this season.
Season-best efforts were put up by many of the girl’s team members on the day. Kaylee Corsentino jumped, hopped, and landed to go a season best distance of 32’ 2.5” in her specialty event the triple jump. Nya Sciacca followed with a 12th place finish at a distance of 29’7”. Sciacca also placed ninth in the long jump at 13’11”.
Desirae Ortivez had a season best and a sixth placing in the 400M dash, timed at 1:07.02. Ortivez put her name in the top ten in the 200M as well at 28.69 for 10th and, after catching her breath, came in 11th in the 1200M at 14.01, another season’s best.
Hope Jones, Alexis Topping, Kalynn Palmer, Shelby Lessar, and Jaycee LaGow also competed for the Redskins at the meet. The team placed 22nd with nine points. Meet winner was Fowler with 67 points.
The boy’s team was led once again with a seventh place finish and two team points at 55.93 by the consistent Eric Morgan, a season’s best.  Morgan, competing for the first time this season in the 200M, finished 16th at 25.09. Jose Aguirre put up his best numbers for the year in the shot put placing 17th, going a distance of 35’4.75”.  Dalton Mason competed in the 100M, 200M, and long jump events on the day.
In the team standings Rocky Ford trounced the field, finishing first with 129 points.
Redskin coach Ron Ortivez said the teams would pick up their pass in the following weeks with the girl’s relay teams, once again getting into the action.
The High Altitude Challenge will be the next meet, Saturday in Alamosa.
