Suspicious blaze destroys empty home in Toltec

FIRE SITE DECLARED A CRIME SCENE.

Huerfano and La Veta Fire Protection District firefighters responded to this suspicious fire that destroyed an unoccupied building at 85 CR 593 in Toltec late Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured in the blaze but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Huerfano County Sheriff Bruce Newman said once the fire was extinguished, the scene was secured overnight by law enforcement with agents from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation expected to arrive at the scene sometime Wednesday.

This is the second suspicious fire under investigation in Huerfano County in the past two weeks. On March 15, firefighters from Huerfano and La Veta responded to a suspicious mobile home fire in the 5000 block of Comanche in the Navajo neighborhood. That structure too was fully destroyed and unoccupied at the time of the fire. The CBI also investigated that blaze, but Sheriff Newman said mid-week the report on that fire investigation has not been completed. If you know anything about these fires contact the Huerfano Sheriff’s Office at 719-738-1600.
