LA VETA — The volleyball season is long and grueling, with teams playing well over 20 contests before it is all said and done. Three more matches were completed on the Redskin volleyball season this past Saturday as the Class 1/A Region A Tournament playoffs were held at the Roger Brunelli gym with Sangre de Cristo (19-6), Creede (17-8), De Beque (11-12), and host La Veta (25-0) all taking their turn on the court.

To make a long story short, the Redskins were dominant, winning all three of their matches with the first against Sangre being the most competitive of the three.

Nya Sciacca and Kaylee Corsentino led the way with pin-point kill shots as the Redskins attack totaled 225 points in the three matches to the other three teams’ total of 117. Sonia Vallejos did an excellent job in the assists department and M’Kenna Smith, Desi Ortivez, Rachelle and Shaylee Andreatta all had a solid weekend of play, as well.

Congratulations to Corsentino for being selected the La Veta Volleyball Player of the Match against Sangre de Cristo.

“As always we are excited,” said La Veta coach Amber Huff. “We go to Fowler today for our post season scrimmage. As you know, not having the toughest schedule leaves us a little vulnerable going into the post season, but mainly the State Tournament. I’m hoping today, and the days following, we can solidify our defense and dominate offensively against all teams at the tournament. We work hard playing the entire month of July against teams all over the state preparing for our season.”

“I look forward to see how far our preparation will take us and how far we will go this season,” added coach Huff. “This group of girls has faced some challenges this season, but I couldn’t be more proud to say that they have come out stronger and better for it, as have I.”

The La Veta coach ending her post-game comments on a positive note saying, “With the support of the community, parents, and peers, our girls head to the State Tournament for the third year in a row to hopefully continue an undefeated season and bring home a state title.”

CHSAA has released the 1A state volleyball pairings. Matches will open Friday at 8 am and finish with the finals Saturday at 7 pm. The bracket consists of four three-team pools with the winner of each advancing to the state semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

For the semifinals, Pool A winner (Kit Carson, Briggsdale, Weldon Valley) will meet winner of Pool D (McClave, Otis, Holly) and Pool B winner (Fleming, Springfield, Geno Hugo) battles Pool C winner. La Veta is in Pool C with Sangre de Cristo and Wiley.

Congratulations and good luck to the Redskins!
