Springer Schools and Read across America

by Lillian Eva Lieske
SPRINGER — During the week of Feb 24 through March 1, Springer Elementary students and staff participated in “Read Across America”.  This is a reading initiative started by the National Education Association (NEA) on March 2, 1998, to motivate children of all ages to read.
The purpose of this event is to promote reading by motivation and awareness.  These calls for every child in every community in America, to celebrate reading on March 2,  and, the birthday of beloved children’s books author Dr. Seuss.
The Springer Elementary participated in this annual event with a week full of events.  The school had a flyer sent out with fun items for kids to do such as dressing up in different fun Dr. Seuss themed books.  An example of special activities was a “Wacky Wednesday”, where everyone was encouraged to get silly with crazy hair, clothes, and socks.
Each day there was a reading event at the elementary with  special guest readers for the students.  Some special guests that showed up to the schools were Springer Red Devil basket ball players Jose Urquillo, Chase Casias, Owen Burton, and Gabriel Garcia.  Other guest readers included Springer Board of Education Vice-President Monica Burton, President Robert Tafoya,  Springer High School FFA members, community member Patricia Quesada, and the Springer 6th grade class.
The week long events ended on Thursday March 1 with guests reading to the students and, followed by cake for all.   Special thanks go out to these amazing students and community members, for participating in “Read Across America” at the elementary school.
Through this nationwide event, Springer elementary teachers and staff have the tools they have learned and taught throughout the years, for their students to get the motivation, resources and, initiative they need to read all year long and hopefully, the rest of their lives.
In cities and towns all over the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, grandparents, parents, and caregivers are given the essential tools and resources they need to bring the joys of reading to children of all ages through their local schools.
The teachers and staff at Springer Elementary work tirelessly to give their students the quality education they deserve, and special events like ”Read Across America”  helps the teachers and staff in their efforts to motivate and encourage their students in their school experience in Springer.  The community of Springer should be proud of the amazing staff they have at the elementary school.
