SPRINGER — All over, people are engaging in the pleasures of the holiday season. On the evening of Tuesday, December 12, the citizens of Springer were treated to the annual Springer Elementary Christmas program. In addition to the musical presentation put on by the elementary children, the Mariachi Cardenal performers from Las Vegas, NM also regaled the masses with their mariachi music. Springer schools teacher Debra Arellano spent the past couple of months preparing all
Springer Elementary children grades K – 6 for this performance. The children sang a New Mexico rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Many of the costumes were made by the children including rattlesnake heads and turquoise rings. Arellano said that every child in the school had a roll. Even those who did not want to sing a part in the song participated in the capacity of stage hands and took a bow at the end of the presentation.
A cool touch to the song was when the children reached the final verse where, on the twelfth day of the Christmas their true love gave to them “twelve mariachis” and the Mariachi Cardenal chimed in with a rousing solo. At the end of the program, the children were able to visit Santa and receive a bag of goodies. Even the mariachis took the opportunity to pose with Santa.
Santa himself (Timm Trujillo) did quadruple duty this past week. Not only did he show up for the Christmas program, but he made an appearance the following day at Springer Elementary and passed gifts out to all the children.
Then on Saturday, he was available at the Luna Community College auditorium to hear children’s Christmas wishes and pass out goody bags at this chamber-sponsored event. At sundown on that same day, he was available to ride in the Town of Springer sponsored Light Parade. As the countdown to Christmas continues, folks in Springer have been embracing the fun of the holiday season.
