SPRINGER — The morning of Saturday, March 26 dawned cold and brisk, and those in attendance of Springer’s annual Easter egg hunt were bundled against the unseasonable cold. This year, the Town of Springer and the Knights of Columbus combined forces and had one large hunt at the Springer football field rather than two smaller ones as they have in years past. Volunteer Dan Roberts said they hid 360 boiled eggs, 150 plastics eggs, and 30 prize eggs. Kids aged 2-10 raced across the browned grass of the field, trying to be one of the lucky ones who managed to find one of the coveted prize eggs. A few hours after the hunt, a surprise winter storm dropped at least six inches of snow on Springer. The snow made traveling conditions treacherous, and the Assembly of God church was opened to any stranded travelers needing a place to stay for the night to wait out the storm. Luckily, as is often the case with winter storms in New Mexico, the sun came out on Easter morning, and the much needed snow began to melt. Getting into the spirit of the season, one Springer resident built a giant snow bunny to celebrate the holiday and the snow.
