4-H’ers Hack Holes

WALSENBURG-  The team of Buck Wright, Cory Pearson and Danny Pearson bested twelve other teams to claim the fourth Annual 4-H Board Tournament held at the Walsenburg Golf Club June 7.  The team shot a net 58 to win the fund-raising tournament. The tournament format was a best-ball scramble where all team members hit their shots and move forward to the best ball shot.  They then hit again until the final putt.  The team of Leo Sager, John Galusha and Michelle Andreatta came in second with a net score of 59, and Andy Faris, Jess Klienschmidt and Lauree Romero came in third with 61.  Net scores are derived after team handicaps are subtracted from the actual score the team shot.   The team of Dwight ‘Woody’ Arnold, Mike ‘The Voice of the Redskins’ Holrick and Franklin Geiser from La Veta shot the lowest score of the day with a gross score of 67.  The team handicap of 4 kept them out of the money.

The Pearsons were in town for a family reunion.  Several other members of the clan also participated in Saturday’s tournament which made for a festive family gathering.   Franklin Geiser was the youngest player on the course today.  Geiser, who will be a senior at La Veta, is the number-one player for the Redskins.  He sports an eight handicap.  According to teammate, Woody Arnold, “Frank was smoking them today.”  Others like Kleinschmidt, have only played golf a few times, but Kleinschmidt’s shot on the 168-yard, number six hole was closest to the pin until Danny Pearson inched him out to win the prize.

The tournament was a fundraiser for the 4-H Board to help defray the thousands and thousands of dollars of expenses needed to run the annual Huerfano County Fair.  According to tournament organizer, Bobby Andreatta, participants paid to play and hole sponsors also paid to advertise with placards placed on every hole,.

This year’s fair is the second weekend in August and culminates with the livestock sale Sunday afternoon.  Coincidentally, the pig, sheep and rabbit weigh-in was held this morning at the livestock barn in La Veta. This organization has long been a means for the youth of the county to build character and learn skills such as responsibility, service to community, teamwork, and finance.  Soon these youths will be stopping by your business to ask for support and to hand out tickets to the BBQ dinner which precedes the auction.

The 4-H stands for Head, Heart, Hands and Health, but this weekend it was more like, Heck of a shot, How’d you do that, you Hit it Hard!  In contrast to last weekend’s tournament, the parking lot was filled with pick-up trucks and four-by-fours, which goes to show the sport of golf is for everyone. This weekend, the usual 4-H crowd turned in their branding irons for nine irons and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Golf Galore

LA VETA-  The Library Board held their annual fund-raising tournament June 7 at the Grandote Peaks Club.  Ten four-person teams competed in the scramble format (no handicap) to vie for top honors.  The team of  Bill Fitzgerald, Charlie Seal, Alan Smith and Bob Gilbert won the tournament, shooting fourteen under par.   Placing second was Frank Swafford, Jim Allan, Chris Tearverry and “Copper’’ Tearverry.

The annual tournament is one of the La Veta library’s main moneymakers.  Funds are used to buy new books as well as to pay building maintenance and general operating expenses.  Entry fees paid for the use of the course, meals  and refreshments.  Prizes awarded to the winners were gift certificates to the Clubhouse.  The balance of the entry fees went directly to the library.  If you would like to volunteer at the La Veta Library or make a donation, please call 742-3572.
