LA VETA — Poet, Henry Van Dyke observed: “Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.” That describes the spirit of inclusiveness that prevails at Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta. For forty years the council, through its gallery and educational programs, has promoted participation in the arts for each and every member of the community.
The original founding members, ten in all, were inspired by the excitement surrounding an art fair that had concluded the previous year in La Veta and were determined to offer those in the community a similar established form of artistic and cultural exchange. Participation in the visual and tactile arts, including mentoring from accomplished artists and artisans suggested the “guild” concept and within a year, membership in the new organization had risen to over fifty, and the rest is history…but, not quite. In 1997, the idea to change the name and organize as a non-profit was submitted; to make the focus of the organization broader, more regional and to create more appeal for a larger number of artists and patrons of the arts.
Today the Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe) provides many vehicles for those interested in the arts to show and sell their works, with between ten and fifteen themed shows a year at the SPACe Gallery in La Veta. Other sponsored events include a high school student show, educational programs for children and adults, and the hugely popular Art-in-the-Park art fair conducted during 4th of July activities. Cooperative efforts with the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center in Pueblo continue to make this among the most creatively exciting locations in the state.
Spanish Peaks Arts Council will continue to foster and provide a positive experience for the professional and amateur alike.
