Rockies third at All-Star break

by Larry Patrick

DENVER — The first half of the season is over and the Colorado Rockies find themselves in third place in a 5 team division. Just two weeks ago it appeared the Rox might stay in the pennant race for a while but they won only 1 of 6 games against the two teams ahead of them in the division last week which put them 16 games out of first and 8 games out of the wild card race.

The Rockies will be facing several teams that are struggling after they resume play this weekend. If they can get some momentum going, they could get back into the wild card race and have a chance at post-season action in October.

With the trading deadline coming up at the end of the month, the Rockies have to decide if they will be sellers or buyers. If the front office doesn’t feel they can catch the teams ahead of them for a wild card berth, we could see some of our players being traded to other teams for prospects in hopes of getting better next year. Players most likely to be traded could be Charlie Blackmon, Carlos Gonzales, Jorge De La Rosa, Mark Reynolds or Daniel Decalso. If the Rockies feel they still have a chance at getting to the playoffs, then they could look to trade for a player or two that they feel would make the team better now.

The Rockies have been sporadic in the first half but have players like numerous players having excellent seasons. They have a young pitching staff that looks to get better. Putting it all together though has been a struggle and the Rockies need to show more consistency in hitting, pitching and defense if they want to make a run for post- season play this year.
