ROAR for Relay for Life

Saturday, August 4 in Trinidad

by Kendra Doherty

TRINIDAD — Our annual ROAR for Relay for Life event is on Saturday, August 4 at Central Park in Trinidad. ROAR for Relay for Life is active in Las Animas and Huerfano counties.

This year’s cancer survivor dinner, provided by Tony’s Diner, is at 5:30 pm. The survivor and caregiver lap starts at 6:30. Anyone can dedicate a luminaria bag that lights our track with loved ones name on them who have fought cancer, celebrate a survivor, or honor a current cancer fighter for just $5. Anyone can sign up for relay as a participant and/or have a team. We also need volunteer help for the day of our big event, and give community service hour credits.

Come enjoy fun for all at our event with zumba at 6 pm, live DJ music, face painting, corn hole toss, bra pong, dunk tank, Hillbilly Golf (or ladderball), and a whipped cream pie eating contest. Kid activities include sand art, a scavenger hunt, coloring contest, 3 legged race, and tie-dye shirts. There will be a silent auction, team fundraisers, merchandise sales, and more. If you would like to be a vendor, call event leader Kendra Doherty at 719-680-0693.

Doherty states, “One American loses their fight with cancer every minute. One in two men and one in three women will get cancer. I personally know over 58 family and friends that have had cancer. I am 39 years old so that’s more people than years I’ve been alive. I also had a cancer scare of my own when I learned that I have two masses in my sternum.”

Lacey Williams, team captain for team ‘Dreamwalkers’ says, “I relay for the loved ones that I have lost in this battle, I relay for future battles, for the future of my niece who has the chromosomes that will guarantee a fight against cancer. I relay for hope that she will win her fight and that one day we all win this fight for good.”

Suzanne Harkin, team captain for team ‘Faith. Hope. Cure.’, says “I walk each year at the ROAR for Relay for Life because I hate cancer. I have seen what it can do to people my family and I love and care about too many times. This is my way of fighting back, honoring those who lost their war or are still fighting, and trying to make a small difference in the hope for a miracle.”

Linda Pfalmer, ROAR event co-chair and cancer survivor, says, “I relay for future generations. If not for the medical breakthroughs, new procedures, and new medicines that have been the result of research money that we have contributed to as a result of fundraising through relay, I would not be a survivor and not be able to continue in this battle against cancer.”
