SPRINGER — If you were looking for edge-of-your-seat excitement, the place to be was Sim Brown Gym in Springer, NM on Friday night for the boys’ junior high and varsity games against the Maxwell Bears. The junior high boys’ team played to win, and the varsity players set their jaws, determined to beat the Bears and redeem themselves after the loss they suffered at Maxwell’s hand two weeks ago.
The Springer junior high boys played a strong and steady game against the Maxwell Bears defeating them 51 to 38. This game warmed up the crown for the pièce de résistance – the battle between the varsity Bears and Devils.
The air in the fully-packed house was stifling as the varsity teams matched each other point for point. At half time, the score was tied up 31-all; a trend that remained throughout the game with a score of 48-48 at the top of the 4th quarter. With stoic determination, the Springer Red Devils gradually overcame the Maxwell Bears until, ultimately, the Devils prevailed with a score of 71 to 61, and they ecstatically reclaimed the cowbell, which they had lost to Maxwell during their last game. The top scoring bear was Carl Gonzales with 22 points and the top scoring Devil was Isaiah Garcia with 30. As far as three pointers go, Maxwell earned seven and Springer six.
