RE-1 declares vacancy in District B

WALSENBURG- Diego Bobian presided over the board meeting at Peakview School as President Jerant was absent. With four board members present, the meeting moved quickly.
The highlight of this meeting was the recognition of the John Mall golf team. The four golfers and their coach Lee Vigil were recognized by the board. Certificates were handed out and the trophies from past tournaments were on display. Justin Eccher and Michael Maldonado qualified for the state golf tournament being held in Gunnison October 3 – 4.
The board also approved a resolution declaring a vacancy in District B. Notices will go out to the papers and interested citizens may send in letters of interest to RE-1. Once letters have been received and reviewed by the board, a director will be appointed. As this coincides with an election year, the person appointed will serve a regular four-year term.
During the business section, various questions were asked regarding budget line items. E-Rate, coffee, and computer services were queried. Dan Harper thanked the district for their loan of sound equipment for use at the Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival. The schools were provided with a taste of Celtic music this year with concerts at the Fox Theatre and storytelling in the schools.
The district accountability committee list was approved, as was a foreign exchange student from Russia. Yelizaveta Nikolayevna Lykhenko will be attending John Mall High School. The board approved Leah Frye-Wilson for early graduation as well. The schools are beginning NWEA evaluations.
The sports complex celebration will be on September 30. It starts at JMHS at 5 pm with a dinner for the VIPs and donors from the community. Tours of the school and complex will start at 4 pm. Festivities will continue with a game held that night. Homecoming week is October 3-8. The homecoming parade will be October 7, and John Mall will be playing Rocky Ford. The game will start at 7 pm.
In other business, the board voted on extra-duty assignments for the winter semester, hirings of bus drivers,and approved additions to the substitute teacher, volunteer, secretary and cook lists.
