RATON — Raton hosted Tierra Encantada Saturday and came away with marks in the win column for both varsity teams.
The ladies took the early lead in the game by working the ball to Sydni Silva who dropped in six points. Estrella Vargas and Andie Ortega rounded out the scoring. The Lady Scorpions went three of seven and kept up with the Lady Tigers from the floor with both teams scoring in double digits in the second quarter.
The Lady Scorpions defense stalled the Lady Tigers efforts at scoring and bought the game to within one point before the Tigers defense stopped the Scorpions. By the time the final buzzer sounded the Lady Tigers had once again extended the lead 14 and pulled off the win 51-37.
The boys’ game was close, starting off as both teams dropped three-point shots to start off the scoring. Raton added three more while Tierra could only garner one more three-pointer. Both teams did double digits in the second quarter with Raton outscoring the Scorpions 20-13. Neither team visited the free throw line in the first quarter. Austin Jones stepped up to the line nine times making five for the Tigers while Tierra only made three of eight shots from the charity stripe.
In the second half, no one scored in the first three minutes of play. By the end of the quarter, both teams only managed to score nine. In the fourth quarter, the Scorpions rallied, but too little, too late, outscoring Raton 17-14. At the final buzzer Raton pulled out the win 58-51.
