by David J. Santisteven Jr.

WESTON — Behind a great team effort on both sides of the ball, not too mention 39 points from sophomore guard Kirsten Martinez, the Primero Lady Bulldogs earned a big Class 1A District Six win over Moffat/Mt. Valley.

Primero got scoring from five different players, Senior Taylor Mestas had eight points, seven rebounds, and two steals, fellow seniors Alysia Baca and Gabi Griego added a combined 16 points, combining for 10 rebounds and playing well defensively. Martinez had ten steals leading to 18 of her 39 points, was eight of 10 from the freethrow line, and added nine boards and six assists.

Primero’s Taylor Mestas, Gabi Griego and Melanie Lujan had a huge district win last weekend. They will play at Cotopaxi Friday then end the regular season at home against South Baca Saturday.

Moffat’s Alyssa Hammel, only a sophomore, had a game high 43 points, 24 rebounds and six steals.

Primero jumped out early in this district contest with good defense and shooting, hitting on four three points from three different players. Moffat made a run in the second half to cut into a double digit deficit, but Primero caused eight Cowboy turnovers in the last three minutes of the game to earn the 67-60 win. The night before, Primero lost to Sangre de Cristo on the road in a D-6 game.

The Lady Bulldogs will end the regular season this weekend with two games, travelling to take on Cotopaxi (12-5)(6-4) on Friday at 3 p.m.
