WALSENBURG — With passage of the recreational marijuana law in Colorado in the election of 2012, times are changing, exemplified this past weekend when a pot seller in Walsenburg was robbed by his customer and promptly called police for help.
Although the sale of recreational marijuana does not become legal until January, the victim does not face any charges, according to Police Chief Tommie McLallen.
The suspect however faces a laundry list of criminal charges and is in custody, although authorities are not sure of his real name.
McLallen said police were called to a Stacy Drive address at 10:40 pm Sunday, October 13 to investigate the armed robbery report. After speaking with officers for a while, the victim admitted to police he was about to sell less than one ounce of marijuana to the suspect, when the suspect spied the victim’s pistol on a counter top and decided to grab it and make off with the weed without paying for it.
Police obtained a description of the suspect and his vehicle and both were broadcast to local authorities by county dispatch.
Huerfano County Sheriff’s deputies heard the radio report and contacted the suspect at 7-11 where he was taken into custody without incident.
McLallen said the suspect had given authorities two different names, and a records check is being done by detention officers to establish his true identity.
The suspect faces charges of first degree burglary, aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and criminal impersonation.
In other police news, McLallen said investigations into three separate child sex assault cases are moving forward, with one forensic interview set to take place mid-week. No arrests in any of the cases have been made so far.
