Playoff bound Triggers in home stretch

TRINIDAD — The Triggers have completed their second-to-last home stand with success, extending their lead over the Santa Fe Fuego by seven games last week, going 5-1. The team faced three rain delays, but on Friday and Saturday the team treated fans to a pair of high scoring doubleheaders. The Triggers won three of four, eliminating the Las Vegas Train Robbers from post season and guaranteeing the Triggers a place in post season play for the fourth time since they entered the Pecos League. With their comfortable lead over the Fuego, it is not certain if they will clinch the Northern Division because Trinidad will face Santa Fe the last nine games of the season. Tonight, Trinidad will be in Garden City to face the Wind for four games. Beginning on Tuesday, the Triggers will be at home for three games against the Fuego during which they could clinch the Northern Division with three wins. If so, this would be their first Division title. The weekend action showed why Trinidad leads the league in many of the offensive categories: they put up 51 runs in their last four outings, giving up 27. With two days of rain delays, the Triggers finally hit the dirt Friday with a dominating 15-2 win over Las Vegas. It was a superhuman effort by Caleb Bryson

who helped carry the Triggers to victory in seven innings. Bryson racked up six RBIs on two hits, both homeruns. He homered in the first and fifth innings. Trinidad dominated from the opening hit; the Train Robbers allowed seven runs in the opening three innings. Matt Horan picked up the win for the Triggers. Horan pitched six innings and allowed no earned runs, six hits and no walks while striking out three. In the second half of the doubleheader, Trinidad scored four in the first and one in the second, but a disastrous top of the third for Richie Anderson saw Las Vegas attempt to rob the Triggers of victory. Anderson, who had thrown 13 pitches in the first two innings and allowed one hit, stumbled, giving up seven runs and seven hits before he was pulled by Trigger Skipper Royce Holder. The bottom of the sixth saw the Triggers come to life. A solid relief by Trigger closer Justin Mauldin held the Train Robbers at bay. Trinidad’s comeback victory began when Luc Pomales singled, stole second then third, putting him in scoring position with one out. Each team blasted the other team’s pitching. There were 21 total runs and 24 hits during the game. Eight pitchers were used in the game as the two managers searched for any way to finish it off. Trinidad continued to pile up the runs on Sunday, scoring four runs in the last three innings, on the way to a 17-5 win over Las Vegas. Christian Schneider got his fourth win for the Trinidad Triggers despite allowing five runs over five innings. Holder has expanded the lineup to 25 and brought in three pitchers to give relief to a struggling bullpen. Holder said, “The bullpen is a rollercoaster and we need to take it one game at a time. We are playing well.” He also said four Trigger players are being called up to the higher leagues once the season is over. Two players already know: Eric Williams and Emanuel Paulino will be going to the Pan American or American Association. Eric Williams is hitting .468 and will likely be the Pecos hitting king. As the Triggers continue to hit the ball, they are likely to be unstoppable in the final stretch. Eight of 11 of their hitters are batting over .300. As the season is nearing an end, you have three chances remaining to watch the team in action. The playoffs begin July 29-August 2.
