Play Ball! Baseball begins

by David Tesitor

HUERFANO, LAS ANIMAS, COLFAX COUNTIES – It’s that time of year for the smell of rosin and the cracking of bats as high schools begin their annual spring rite of baseball. The John Mall Panthers, Trinidad Miners, and Raton Tigers will all once again don the pinstripes for another season of America’s favorite pastime.

The John Mall Panthers will begin play on March 12 when they travel to Crowley County for their first game. First pitch is 4 pm. In 2017, the Panthers struggled with their offense and an error-filled defense as the team crossed the plate only 25 times in their 0-15 season. They gave up 190 runs, falling victim to the 10 run mercy rule. The Panthers are rebuilding this season and will field players not all of whom have played in the summer leagues or organized ball. With new coaches running the plays, the Panthers will return to the fundamentals of the game.

The Trinidad Miners also struggled last season going 1-19, winning only their last game of the season. They will begin their 2018 season on the road against the Cotopaxi Pirates on Tuesday, March 13 with first pitch at 4 pm. Trinidad also struggled defensively last year, giving up 193 runs. The crux of their offense last season came from the eight seniors whom they lost to graduation. As a team in 2017, the Miners hit .246% and will need to improve on their at bat appearances if they hope to be competitive.

The Raton Tigers coming off a successful 2017 season where they competed in the New Mexico state championship season, losing to Texico in the semifinals. They completed an 18-8 season, coming on strong mid-season.

This new season should prove exciting as the team will return several starters including a deep pitching stable, which should prove to be their strength. The Tiger offense scored 229 runs and only allowed 119 runs which was the best in their District 2/3. Only McCurdy allowed fewer runs at 88.

Coach Mike Marez will again return to the helm to lead the team.
