Overnight murder under investigation in Walsenburg

WALSENBURG — A 37-year old Trinidad man is dead from stab wounds suffered early Saturday morning Jan. 20 on Seventh Street in Walsenburg.
Huerfano County Sheriff Bruce Newman said the man may have been involved in an altercation with up to three other individuals near the Ettleman insurance company office at 320 West Seventh St. sometime between 1:30 and 2 am Saturday when he was fatally stabbed.
Authorities are actively seeks Kevin Vigil, approximately 30-years old and from the Pueblo area in connection with the murder. The yet unnamed victim was transported to Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center early today where he succumbed to his injuries. A female who was with the victim when he was killed was not injured and has been interviewed and has given a statement to law enforcement officials.
The suspect, Vigil, is described as 5’11” tall 220 pounds he may be bald and have a dark beard and mustache.
The stolen vehicle, a white 2001 Kia Sportage, was found by Pueblo police around 5:37 a.m. Saturday near Beckwood Park in the 2100 block of Lakeview on Pueblo’s South Side. Two of the vehicle’s three occupants fled on foot after it failed to stop for officers; police continued to pursue the vehicle until it crashed into a Pueblo police cruiser occupied by two officers in the area of Abriendo Avenue and Interstate 25. The officers were transported to a local hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
After a brief struggle with the suspect driver, police took a juvenile male into custody without further incident. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
The Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with CBI are still seeking assistance finding the identified suspect in the homicide that occurred earlier this morning in Walsenburg: 30-year-old Kevin Vigil.
Police believe Kevin was in the vehicle and still in the Pueblo area. He is described as 5 feet 11 inches and 195 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair and ties to Pueblo. He should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

Newman said when the stabbing and death were reported his office notified the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, who are on-scene in Walsenburg now.
CBI agents were checking businesses along West Seventh that may have surveillance security video seeking further information regarding the murder.
