HUNDREDS OF FIREFIGHTERS flooded into Huerfano County in the beginning of July to battle the two-headed dragon that was known as the Spring Fire. The fire quickly grew to become the third largest fire in Colorado history.
But fire crews from the three local fire protection districts were first on the line, and were the last ones to leave it.
We would urge the people of Huerfano, Las Animas, and Colfax counties to take a drive some weekend, and look at the stunning destruction, either here, or in Colfax county where the Cimarron Fire scorched through last month.
More importantly though, look at what was saved.
You will see home after home, where the fire literally burned up to the back door, and fire crews managed to save it. You can tell epic battles were fought; sometimes winning, sometimes losing.
These photos are from Captain Paul Gomez, with the Huerfano County Fire Protection District.
Gomez has been a volunter firefighter in Huerfano County for over 20 years.
Other firefighters have equally amazing photos; ask them to share them with you, or better yet, share them with us.
* On a side note, dozens of letters have come into the World Journal, addressed to Spring Fire firefighters. We wanted you to know we have forwarded them on to all three county fire departments, as they all took part.
