Lee Roy Sneddon 8-6-2014 Lee slipped away from our lives on August 6, 2014 at home after a brief illness. He was 83 years young. Lee was born near La Veta, CO to Lois Allen and George Sneddon in 1930. He grew up in the coal camps and ranch lands around La Veta. He graduated from LaVeta High School in 1948, attended college for a year and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1950 and served during the Korean War. After the Marines, he attended Adams State College (now University) to graduate with a BA in teaching. He taught in several high schools in Colorado before coming to Homer, Alaska in 1960. He returned to Adams State to earn a Masters degree, then went back to Alaska to teach and coach at his beloved West Anchorage High School. Everywhere Lee taught, he also coached. He was involved in X-C running, football, wrestling, track & field, and his favorite, basketball. Lee touched many young adult lives and remembered every athlete from Little League to the last pole vaulters he coached after retirement, and his players
remembered him. Lee retired from teaching in 1980. For the next twenty years, Lee was involved in construction working from laying asphalt to removing snow in the winter months. He drove his favorite grader ”Mabel”. Lee was a Master Mason of the LaVeta Masonic Lodge #59, A.F.&A.M. Initiated in 1952, he proudly became a life member after fifty years in 2002. Lee had a great love of the outdoors. He was a savvy hunter, a patient fisherman, and a green thumb in his yard and garden. After a visit to his ancestral homeland of Scotland in 1999, he designed a garden for his front yard to remind him of St. George’s Square in Glasgow. It was (and is) his pride and joy. Lee was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother Don; sister Willa Dean; brother-in-law Elmer; daughter Rhonda; and his close friend, Tom Bachmeyer. Lee is survived by the love of his life, wife Jan; daughters Sandra Hurley and Susan (Keith) York; son Lee R. (Ronda) Sneddon, Jr.; and brothers George (Barbara) and Lloyd (Kiyomi). He has 13 grandchildren: Eugene, Amber, Mark, Jesse, Trent, Tiffany, Scott, Kindle, Rebecca, Joshua, Lee R. III, Cassie, and Paige. He also has 17 great-grandchildren, the latest a great-grandson, Max, and a great-granddaughter Bailee. Lee will be remembered by all those whose lives he touched. Per his request, there will be no services. His ashes will be scattered by family at a later date. To remember Lee, please plant a new flower in your garden next year.
