JoAnn Matthes 2-15-1942 ~ 12-27-2013 JoAnn Matthes, 71, of Walsenburg, CO passed away on December 27, 2013. Born in Chicago, IL on February 15, 1942 to Mary and Edward Cannon, JoAnn spent much of her life active in the community, working with non-profit organizations and helping others. While in Chicago and suburbs, JoAnn was president of the Lansing Jr. Women’s Club, helped introduce the “Helping Hand” program and taught religious class at St. Ann’s Church in Lansing, IL. Upon moving to Walsenburg in 1988, JoAnn quickly helped start the local Care and Share program at St. Mary’s Church and started teaching a religion class at St. Marys school. She also spent time as the “regent” for the Catholic Daughters Association of Walsenburg, volunteering for the hospital auxiliary board, volunteering at St. Mary’s church rectory and spent several years with the Walsenburg Women’s Club. She is best remembered for her positive outlook, always putting others first, a love for professional wrestling and her strong nature. Through the trials of her health in recent months, she never once lost her spirit we all know so well. JoAnn is survived by her husband, Ralph Matthes; son, Edward Matthes; and siblings, Mary Tafoya, Margaret Reed and Thomas Cannon. Gifts in JoAnn’s memory may be sent to Sangre de Cristo Hospice and Palliative Care in Pueblo, CO. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
