Joan Elizabeth Hicklin 4-12-1937 ~ 12-13-2013.

Joan Elizabeth Spencer was born to Walter and Mildred Spencer, Portland, Oregon. Joan and her brother, Carl Irving Spencer and sister, Linda Ann (Mitschele) Spencer, grew up in the Portland area and enjoyed spending summers at their great- grandparents’ ranch in Husum, Washington. Joan attended Oregon State University and spent her college summers working on a fishing boat out of Depot Bay, Oregon. She, her then husband Joe Johannes, and their three children, Steve (Moose, WY), Kevin (Henry Lake, ID, deceased) and Erika (Mandan, ND) sailed the inland passageway from Seattle, WA to Ketchikan, AL where they lived for several years. She returned to the contiguous 48 states and owned a restaurant/motel in White Pass, WA before relocating to Colorado Springs, CO in the early 1980’s, where she re-activated her real estate license. In 1989 she met current husband, Ronald Hicklin, and when they married in 1990, moved to Pine Junction, CO and subsequently to Walsenburg, CO where they opened Black & White Real Estate Company, which they operated for 14 years. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2011, she and Ron moved to Kingman, AZ because of the first-class Kingman Regional Medical Cancer Center located there. Joan was an avid horsewoman and bred and raised Tennessee Walking Horses for years, at several points owning over 15 horses at the same time. She was an excellent cook and entertainer and always celebrated every occasion and holiday to the max. All her children and grandchildren loved going to Grandma Joan’s for the holidays. She will be sorely missed by her husband, children and grandchildren, as well as the many friends she has made over the years. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Kingman Regional Medical Cancer Center in Kingman, AZ, if so desired.
