Obituary Frederick H Benson

Frederick H Benson 7-7-1935 ~ 3-8-2015 Frederick H Benson, 79, passed away on March 8, 2015, at the Colorado State Veterans Home. Fred was born July 7, 1935 in Red Wing, CO to Homer and Lottie Benson. He was the youngest of four children. He grew up in Red Wing and graduated from Walsenburg High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1958, serving in Korea. In 1962, he married Kaye Piner, and they just celebrated their 52nd anniversary. Fred went to work for CDOT on the Valley Highway in Denver, in 1964. In 1970, they moved to La Veta and he worked on La Veta Pass for many years. He retired from CDOT in 1991after 27 years. Fred served on the La Veta Town Board, the Huerfano County 4-H Fair Board and Rodeo Board for several years. After he retired, he drove a school bus for 14 years and did some volunteer work for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. He loved to fish and hunt deer and elk. He was a jokester and loved to give people a hard time. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wanda Waggoner. He is survived by his wife

Kaye of La Veta; children, Brenda (Bruce) Rheuff of Eaton, CO and Ray (Kristal) Benson of Olathe, CO. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Haley (Shane) Curtis of Evans, CO, Tera (Kelly) Tipton of Syracuse, KS, Cally (Marty) Moritz of Tribune, KS, Braden Larrew of Eads, CO and Draya Benson of Olathe, CO. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Brooklin, Bailey and Scotty Moritz and Wade Curtis; brother Harold Benson; sister Phyliss Barks; and his nephew/helper Bob Waggoner. Graveside service is 11 am Saturday March 14, at La Veta Cemetery and reception to follow at the Benson house in La Veta.
