LAS ANIMAS- The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash. The crash occurred on Colorado Highway 12, seven miles southwest of Trinidad.
A 2005 Suzuki motorcycle was traveling in a northwest direction on eastbound Colorado Highway 12 with a 2009 Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle following.
The driver of the Suzuki failed to negotiate a left hand curve, causing the Suzuki to travel onto the paved portion of the west (right) shoulder and collided with a guardrail, prior to ejecting the driver.
The driver of the Harley Davidson attempted to slow and avoid the Suzuki, and lost control, causing the Harley to roll 1/4 times while ejecting the driver. Both motorcycles came to rest on their sides in the roadway. The driver of the Suzuki, 49-yeard old Tomas Lee Alford of Trinidad, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Las Animas County coroner. The driver of the Harley Davidson, 46-year old David Duran of Trinidad, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Alcohol and excessive speed are not considered to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
