Hello, my name is Leonard M. Baca Jr and I am a candidate for the Office of Sheriff for Colfax County. I’m from a five-generation coal mining family and have been an active member in the Raton and Colfax community for 42 years. My family background has instilled a strong work ethic based on traditional values respect for your neighbors and a willingness to do anything you would ask others to do. I have been a member of law enforcement in the Colfax Community for 20 plus years and got my start in the municipality of Raton who provided me the opportunity to attend the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Academy.
I was selected by Sheriff Rick Sinclair to aid in the transformation of the Sheriff’s office into a proactive and responsive agency to protect the people of Colfax while working as a transparent, unbiased and professional organization.
My training and experience has, led to achieving key milestones within my career, highlighted as a Field Training Officer, An Emergency Response Team Operator, Traffic Crash Instructor, Crime Scene Investigator and earned my Associates of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice. I have worked towards enhancing my leadership skills and have earned my Intermediate, Advanced, Mid Management, Command, and Executive Certifications through the Department of Public Safety. This has aided in developing a comprehensive policy regarding standards of conduct as well as professionalism within the agency. Under our leadership we have employed new technologies to assist our deputies while on duty to maintain their presence in the community. We developed and established a new communications system to enhance officer safety within all Colfax County municipalities and unincorporated areas, as well as in vehicle. This computer system also allows deputies to complete work away from the office and out on the streets, providing more access to the public.
My efforts have been by recognized by my command staff having earned several unit citations, multiple drug buster citations, two meritorious citations, and The Medal of Honor.
I humbly seek your vote in electing me as your next Colfax County Sheriff. I will continue to ensure the equitable law enforcement that Colfax County has become accustomed to and deserves. I will work hard to continue the fight against the drug problem and the rise in crime affecting Colfax County.
