Boys overwhelmed by Fleming, meet Sierra Grande this Friday at home

LA VETA — Thursday the Lady Redskins traveling to Mosca to battle for the league championship.
“The Thunderbirds played the best game they had played all year against us,” accorded coach Amber Huff. “We had to be ready and on our toes.”
La Veta had all they could handle in the opening set, but came on strong in the end to win 25-21. The host Sangre team lost their focus as the mistake-free attacking Redskin offense was relentless in the next two sets. The “Red Machine” took the second set and third set in similar fashion 25-19, 25-16.
Mary Goins set her teammates up with 32 assists to help the team in the win. Kaylee Corsentino, Nya Sciacca and Desi Ortivez had 16, 12, and seven kills respectively. Ortivez had five blocks followed by Corsentino and Emalee Ortibez with one each.
Friday, the Redskins faced another tough opponent on their push to the playoffs, as they met Fleming on the Wildcat home court in northeastern Colorado.
“The girls travel a long way to Fleming and were excited to play the Wildcats, a team that would push them,” said Huff. “We haven’t had to work much on a perimeter defense and blocking and covering, so it was nice to get that play. The girls worked hard and made adjustments.”
Competition in the first set was what the visiting Redskins had hoped for as they took the match-up in a tight one, 25-21. The attacking La Veta bunch didn’t let up the rest of the way, with the Wildcats losing hope as the game went on. Two sets later, the visitors had what they came for: a solid impressive victory, 25-20, 25-24.
Against Fleming, Sciacca and Ortivez each had three blocks. Corsentino, Sciacca and Ortivez had 16, 11, and eight kills respectively. Corsentino led the way with 18 serves received, followed by Ortivez with nine and Aryanna Flores with seven. Spreading the defensive responsibilities around, nine players had three digs in the contest.
“We are looking forward to the post season to play and making adjustments needed to play in regionals and state,” stated an enthusiastic coach Huff. “Our mental game will be sharpened in practice and our team bonding will be ramped up. We want our girls playing as one to accomplish all the goals we have set for this season.”
The Redskins sit on top of the District-6 standings and have moved up to fourth in the CHSAANow rankings and are one of only four teams with identical 18-1 records.

Tough trip for the Redskin six
LA VETA — The La Veta Redskins headed northeastward to Fleming last Friday morning. It would end-up being a long trip there and back.
“Unfortunately, we did not generate any scores,” commented Redskin coach Ron Ortivez.
“We did reach the red zone four times, only to turn the ball over. This has been our Achilles heel all season. All-in-all we did a lot of great things and our kids showed growth and tenacity. Fleming is a good team that really executed their scheme well. We did make them earn every yard.”
The Wildcats, sitting in third place in the tough Northern 6-man League, were ready for their visitors, pulling out to a 29-0 first half lead and never looking in the rearview mirror, going on to win the non-conference contest 51-0.
Gus Andreatta got off a long 60-yard punt; Nathaniel Holguin had one fumble recovery. Ty Warren had nine tackles and completed five of 13 passes for 51 yards. He rushed 12 times for 128-yards. Zamir Holguin had 11 tackles, carrying eight times for 42 yards, and caught three passes for 26-yards. Dalton Mason caught the ball one time for 10-yards. Andreatta had one reception for 15-yards.
“Moving forward, I’m really excited to watch our team’s continued growth. Warren has grown into a great leader and captain,” said Ortivez, “He continues to encourage our young team and strives to help each member of our team improve each week.
Coming up is Sierra Grande on Friday. This is their last regular season game and is also Parents Night. Our kids want to send our seniors out with a victory, so it should be a great game.”
