Lady Devils’ last run of the season

by Kara Burton

BERNALILLO — The Lady Devils of Springer are once again paving the path for female sports in this small town. The Devils made history while competing at the New Mexico State Basketball Tournament by being the first female basketball team from Springer to make it past the quarterfinals and advance into the semi-final game.

The ladies left on Wednesday, March 9 to play that same evening in the Bernalillo High School gym. The Lady Devils, ranked 4th, played the 5th ranked Quemado Lady Eagles in the quarterfinal. It was a closely matched game, with both teams fighting hard to advance in the tournament. The Lady Devils outscored the Eagles 10-6 in the first quarter, but the Eagles were able to shorten that gap by halftime to only one point (23-22).

The Devils won the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles by 7 points and never letting up on their lead. Free-throws were a crucial part of the game with Kara Burton making 10 of her 12 points from free-throws.

The Lady Devils made history as they won the game by double digits with a score of 48-38. Katy Scott was the high point man of the night with a total of 17 points.

The Devils hoped to continue their winning streak the next afternoon, March 10. They played the number one seeded Elida Lady Tigers. The Devils knew they must play aggressively and smart in order to beat the well rounded Tigers team.

The Lady Devils came out slowly, scoring a mere two points the entire first quarter, whereas Elida came out aggressively with 14 points.

The Lady Devils played well and matched up closely with their opponent throughout the next three quarters. The Lady Devils traded score for score in the second quarter (14-14), then outscored the Tigers (15-14) the third quarter, but fell behind again in the last quarter, outscored (7-13).

The final score was Tigers 55 – Devils 38. The high point was Kara Burton with 20 points, while the other 18 points were divided among three other players.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Devils and the end of a remarkable season.
