LA VETA — Year round the La Veta Public Library hosts a variety of programs for adults. However, the library also has numerous programs for children. Stephanie Masinton serves as the Children’s Librarian at the La Veta Public Library. She, along with Librarian Kelsey Speaks run Storytime Explorers every Wednesday from 10 am to 11:30 am. The program is designed for ages 0 – 5, but a few older children also attend. The session usually begin with story time downstairs and then continues upstairs for snacks, activities and playtime.
The event held on January 31, was a special event put on through the Growing Readers Together grant. The library received the grant this year to provide recourses and promote early literacy education and awareness, especially to family members, friends, and neighbors, who care for young children. The library will be running a series of special events each month focusing on the American Library Association five practices for promoting early literacy which are to Sing, Play, Read, Write, and Talk. The first event of 2018 was about how singing with young children helps prepare them to read.
Masinton also oversees story time for preschool through second grade every week, alternating between the public library and the school library. Additionally, Masinton runs a teen group Tuesday nights at 7 pm. During the summer there will be weekly programs designed for ages 5 – 11 as well as a reading program.
