La Veta Volleyball is 17-0

LA VETA — What an exciting week of volleyball for the Lady Redskins. Last Tuesday’s non-conference wins against the 3A Salida Spartans was a hard fought battle from start to finish. This was the first time I’ve seen this team get frustrated all season. After losing the first set to Salida 25-16 La Veta amped up their play and took the second set 25-22. The Lady Spartans only gained speed and agility in the third, winning it 25-21. After an exhausting fourth set, La Veta came out with the win 25-19 which put the emotionally and physically drained Redskins into yet another set. That’s where the real Lady Reds came back to the court. Hit after hit, volley after volley, with both teams vying for a kill, the Lady Redskins triumphed over the Spartans and won the fifth set 16-14, moving the team to 15-0. Friday’s Homecoming game was full of excitement with a packed gym cheering on the ladies for their 16th straight win, taking down the Sierra Grand Panthers in three sets, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-20. With their Homecoming festivities behind them, the girls hit the gym for another week of physical and mental training to keep them focused on their goals. Tuesday night, October 14th, the Ladies faced off against the Aguilar Wildcats for another league game. After a heartfelt thank-you to all the parents for their love and support throughout the season, the Redskins took the court and pounded out a win in three against Aguilar, moving the undefeated team to 17-0. This win looked a little different as we saw lots of JV players take to the court and contribute to the win against Aguilar. In fact, by the third set it was only freshmen on the court and they still took the win. One thing is for sure, La Veta is packed with talent from freshmen to seniors, making this a team you’ll want to keep your eye on for many years to come. The Ladies are winding down their regular season play as they travel to Ordway on Thursday to take on the Lady Chargers. Then, it’s on to the all important league game against Sangre de Cristo on Saturday. Sangre is 13-4 overall and 6-0 in league play. No doubt in my mind, this will be a battle by both teams over the number one spot in the league.
