La Veta girls basketball are district champions

LA VETA— In every set of games there is a winner and there is a loser, and the Lady Redskins were not about to come out of the district championship basketball games as the loser. Their heads were in the game from day one and their hard work and determination paid off. They left Alamosa on Saturday as District Champions. Friday started off district action as the Redskins faced off against Creede/Lake City. Every time these two teams have met, La Veta has outskilled and outplayed Creede. This time they took the win, 48-22, paving the way into Saturday’s championship game against the number one seeded Centennial Rams. La Veta lost to the Rams last week in their final home game of the season, 54-61. They could have consumed themselves thinking about revenge, but that’s not how this group of girls play. They learned from that loss and put their knowledge to good use. It was by no means easy because the game was a battle from the start, and the Lady Reds

went into half time trailing 14-20. The girls just kept gaining speed, and by the fourth, the two teams were tied 25-25. Scott Hamilton once said, “ under pressure one can perform fifteen percent better or worse,” Guess what fifteen percent the Redskins played in the last few seconds of the championship game? Yep that’s right… they played fifteen percent better and took the win 35-33. Top players in Saturday’s game were Rena Trujillo with 14 points, 9 rebounds; Sofia Schneider with 9 points, 5 rebounds; Rebecca Uebler with 5 points, 11 rebounds; Gabby Lopez with 5 points, 6 rebounds; and Tai Martinez with 2 points, 7 rebounds. Coach Lester Berry had this to say about his team, ”I was very happy for the girls. Those close games are the ones they will always remember. The girls did everything we asked them to do, and more. It was a great experience for them but they are not satisfied yet; they are ready to work hard this week and get ready for the Regional Championship this Saturday.” Saturday the Lady Redskins will travel to Gunnison and they will take on the Dove Creek Bulldogs at Western State College beginning at 11 am. Best of luck to the Redskins as they make their final stop on the road to State!
