LA VETA — The Lady Redskins were busy this past week, playing four games in five days.

First up, on January 23 was an out-of-state opponent from northern New Mexico. The 13-5 Des Moines High School Demons came to town with winning expectations, filled with demonic ideas of defeating and disposing of the Redskin girls basketball team. Their plan was to conquer, then deadhead directly due south, back home after their devious, destructive, domination.

After three quarters, the Demons looked like they were on their way to fulfilling their goal, pulling ahead with a strong third quarter to lead 29-22. However, the Redskins didn’t allow it to happen, as the hometown favorites rallied big time to get their eighth win of the year at the buzzer, 39-38.

The clincher was a clutch free throw by Rachelle Andreatta with 16 seconds left in the white-knuckle affair.

“We had been working on free throws with Rachelle, and she came through for us,” said Redskin coach Greg King.

Custer County was next up on Thursday evening. The La Veta five were on their game and made quick work of the visitors, taking a half-time lead of 21-4. It didn’t get any better for the Bobcats, with the Redskins winning each of the next two quarters and taking the game at 50-29 in a very physical contest.

Moffat, the third team to play on the Redskin home floor, were out-matched from the beginning. La Veta won going away, totaling their highest scoring attack of the season and winning 71-22. “It was a chance to play a lot of kids in the contest,” offered coach King.

Kaylee Corsentino (17 points), B.J. Rinker (14 points) and Sonia Vallejos (13 points) did the scoring for the Redskins.

After the three home wins, the Redskins hit the road to Creede Saturday for a league match-up. The visiting Redskins took it to the host Miners, and the game was never in doubt. The final score: 57-42 to La Veta.

“I think the girls were a little tired after the busy week and we gave up some points late,” added the Redskin coach. “Sonia Vallejos has been outstanding on defense for us all week.”

Corsentino led all scorers with 33 points.
