La Veta boys close out regular season play

Drop two to Kim and Sangre de Cristo

by David High

LA VETA — The Redskins took the opening tip on their home court this past Friday evening over the visiting Kim/Branson combined team. They then scored the initial basket in the non-conference match-up. The Mustangs answered, but after a Carson Miller bucket and two Alex Mondragon scores the Redskins led 8-4. Unfortunately Kim’s Mason brothers went on a terror scoring nine straight to lead at the end of the first quarter 13-8.

The Redskins with the aid of several baskets by Eric Morgan stayed within a couple of baskets during the second eight minutes, but the Mustangs still had built a 27-20 advantage going into the break. Miller and Mondragon did their best in the following two quarters to try and keep the home team in the game, but the visitors would have none of it and continued to dominate on the offensive end going on to win 57-34.

Saturday things didn’t get any easier for the Redskin boys with the second place in District-6 Sangre de Cristo (15-3) team waiting on their home court for the visiting Redskins. The evening didn’t start well for the Redskins falling behind by 14 points at 16-2.

The Thunderbirds offense continued the onslaught in the second period, even though the Redskin offense got untracked. As a result La Veta, had an impossible task going into the final period down 52-23. Obviously it just wasn’t going to happen as the home team went on to win the conference game 64-24. Miller and Morgan each had six points in the losing effort. The Redskins shot 18 percent from the field.

La Veta going into the post-season playoffs ended up 5-14 overall and eighth in District-6 at 3-7. Sangre ended the season in second (8-2) behind conference champion Sierra at 10-0.
