La Plaza hosts a fine music and dinner party to ring in the New Year

by William T. Beverly, Ph.D

WALSENBURG — South Texas guitarist extraordinare and all around crowd pleaser Jake Cortez wowed the audience at Karen Wilson’s Walsenburg La Plaza Inn New Year’s Eve event.

Also shown is percussionist Joe Camacho, who nicely provided Latin and other rhythms in accompaniment to Cortez’ set list which offered a variety of styles and tempos – all highlighting his guitar and vocal prowes.

Cortez spanned many decades as he skillfully mixed playful melodies such as “If I Only had a Brain” (Wizard of Oz), to an Al Di Meola jazzy guitar piece, “Pink Panther”, a flamenco-styled song for his father, and many other tunes from blues-rock to Freddie Fender, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Mariachi, Hendrix, Jose Feliciano, The Doors, and beyond.

Chef Tim, and the rest of the staff at the fully-booked La Plaza, wonderfully provided the groundwork for the festive evening with tasty gourmet delights and prompt service.

All in all, everyone was pleased and many will remember this evening for years to come.
