Ken Torres running

by Larry Patrick

HUERFANO-  Ken Torres, born in Huerfano County but living many years in Las Animas County, wants to unseat democratic incumbent, Wes McKinley for the 64th State Representative position in November.  Torres campaigned in Walsenburg during the Black Diamond Jubilee last weekend and talked with the Huerfano Journal about his plans and concerns.

Torres, finishing an 8-year run as a Las Animas County Commissioner, says that McKinley has not kept leaders or voters up to date on issues important to them.  He cited claims that McKinley has kept many local leaders in the dark about the Pinon Canyon efforts to keep the army out.  Torres says he would do a much better job in working with leaders in the 64th district to fight the army’s attempts at taking over land that he and his neighbors face losing.

A civil engineer, Torres moved back to the area after working in Denver for 12 years.  He has also served on the school board and was a Wildlife Commissioner.  He wants to see a big improvement in economic development for Huerfano, Las Animas, Otero and other area counties in southeast Colorado.  Torres believes he has excellent relations with other leaders in the area and has gained valuable experience to better serve constituents of the 64th district.

According to Torres, wind and solar energy should be really developed in this area and water will always be something that needs to be protected from bigger cities wanting more of our precious resources.   He traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with U.S. Senator, Ken Salazar and John Salazar of Congress about the concerns over Pinon Canyon.  He has met with army officials to fight any plans on their part to take land by way of eminent domain.  Torres has also talked with Governor Ritter about the concerns he and many landowners have about the Pinon Canyon issue.

The 43-year old Torres plans to campaign a lot in the coming months in Huerfano and surrounding counties to get his name out.  He stresses the need is now to invest in the future of our rural areas.  Torres says there are many other issues affecting this district that he is able to speak about and keep citizens aware of things that he believes Rep. McKinley is failing to do.

It will be the Republican, Ken Torres, against the incumbent, Democrat Wes McKinley for the 64th district state representative seat in November.  You are sure to hear a lot from each one of them about each other and about their concerns for this district.
