James Casias resigns as 3rd Judicial Chairman in run for State Senate

by Bill Knowles

TRINIDAD — Las Animas County Sheriff James Casias is announcing his resignation as chairman of the Third Judicial District. The resignation is tied to state law requiring him to resign.

“I have to do this by law because I am dealing with the election of other people in that position,” Casias told the World Journal Monday afternoon.

“It’s a lot of work being chair of the Third Judicial District, just like it is a lot of work being the chair of the Democratic Party in Las Animas County.” He also resigned that position, because the Colorado Statutes. “It is also a rule in the Democratic bylaws.” Casias said.

Other committees he’s had to leave in his bid for the 35th District State Senate seat are the Domestic Violence Board and the State board on Search and Rescue.
Casias still fills the chair of Fire Marshal in the county.

A meeting is scheduled for March 30 at the community center in Aguilar, where Casias will make official his announcement of resignation.
