LA VETA — A new, locally-made video will be shown at the La Veta Public Library on Thursday, March 22, at 4:00. To get the behind-the-scenes scoop on this new production, we had the creator’s editor, Deb Lathrop, interview the creator, Sam Law.
Tell us about yourself and why you made this video?
Mainly I am someone who loves history — almost any history — and love to share the often over-looked stories that lie buried in the dusty pages of big books. These wonderfully entertaining stories also happen to teach history.
What is this video about and why did you picked this particular topic?
I have entertaining Civil War stories that could go on for days. There are just so many — some funny, some heart-breaking. But right now, one in particular — about the amazing way the Civil War actually ended — about how kind and gracious it was — seemed to me to have some healing power in it. Since they say ‘teach by example,’ I sought a way to tell about this actual time in American history when honor and kindness looked like they might prevail between people of difference in this country — between Northerners and Southerners and between the black and white races. Knowing there was a time when that vision and optimism really existed is encouraging to me. And hopefully to others.
Can you tell us about your choice of materials?
When I got the idea to tell the story — I recalled a short video a friend’s grandson made with Legos about Gettysburg. I wanted to do something like that, but didn’t have any Legos. So I set myself the challenge of making everything I needed — soldiers, horses, cannons — out of the materials I had at hand. Suddenly toilet paper rolls took on new possibilities, as did popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners. The audience will have say if they are effective — besides being somewhat entertaining.
