Records are made to be broken

DENVER — As athletes converge on Jeffco Stadium beginning today, everyone has eyes set on establishing new records.
As history has shown, many are established during championship week. The Hoehne men have seven team records which were set at state. The women have ten.
The Panther men hold two records earned at state while the women have five. Impressively, the La Veta Redskins have earned 17 school records, of which were earned at state. Eight were by the men and nine from the women.
Finally, Kim’s men’s team has five records from state and the Mustang women have the most, with ten.
What is interesting about this statistic is the fact that many of these records did not merit a state championship. In 2017, the only state champion was Jacob Yates of Hoehne who will defend his title in the 110M hurdles.
Kim’s Zariah Mason, who will enter the tournament in two individual events as the number one seed, finished second in both the 100M and 200M dash in 2017. She won the state championship during the 2015 and 2016 season and is looking for some retribution to finish off her high school career as a three time state champion. Mason was also on the 2016 Championship 800M relay. Of athletes from area schools participating at state, Mason has won more state titles than any others, qualifying by one third of a second.
