Hundreds attend commissioners’ Town Hall in La Veta… NOT!

by Bob Kennemer

LA VETA — In what was the lightest turnout thus far in the Huerfano County Commissioners’ town hall sessions, our key elected officials moved forward with only four La Veta residents in attendance. Commissioner Ray Garcia commented that in their first such meeting in Gardner around 50 citizens were on hand. At their second session in Gardner they had 14. In Cuchara, 50 people showed for the town hall.

Recently appointed town board member Mickey Schmidt was on hand along with Kathy Garcia, who serves as the Regional Director for U.S. Senator Cory Gardner. Garcia stated, “I am here to keep up on what is going on in Huerfano County.”

Nonetheless, the commissioners went on to take questions and hear comments. Commissioner Max Vezzani noted these listening sessions were an important part of helping the BOCC learn of community concerns. “Our email addresses are out there,” he added. Mostly accolades were heard from audience members. The Board of County Commissioners were thanked for helping Big R to open a store in La Veta. Similarly the BOCC was thanked for their help in getting the Love’s Truck Stop to locate outside of Walsenburg in the near future.

Other audience members commented on improved county roads and noted that this commission was much more approachable and willing to listen to constituents.
