Human of the Rocky Mountain Southwest: March 1, 2018

I am a Ratonian by birth, raised in this beautiful, serene and peaceful community and have been living here for the past 37 years. While attending Raton High School, I was influenced by many great business teachers and was a member of Business Professionals of America (BPA). Our BPA group competed at the State and National Level in Accounting and looking back on it, this experience had a great influence in the choices I made along my education and career path.

When I left Raton to attend NMSU to earn my bachelors in business administration, I stayed on for nine years living in Las Cruces as working as Records Technician for the Dean’s office at NMSU College of Arts and Sciences. Always in love with the beauty of Raton, I returned to my hometown and began working for the city. I

have been Raton’s city treasurer for 11½ years and even though I knew my family’s roots in Raton go back many years, I discovered in the city’s records that my great great grandfather, T.F. McAuliffe was elected to be a trustee in 1899 and then served as a Mayor in 1906. I feel honored to be following in my ancestors’ footsteps working in city government to make a difference for the future generations of Raton.

Having been a member of Raton’s Professional Business Women (PBW) for the past 11 years gave me the opportunity to hold several PBW offices: local president, local treasurer, state secretary and state president.

My most favorite PBW initiative is our annual Domestic Violence Awareness Walk/Run which is co-sponsored with the Raton Kiwanis as the proceeds raised from this event benefit the local Alternatives for Violence organization which provide vital services needed by families who suffer from domestic abuse in our community.

I just love Raton. The wildlife that roam within and around the city as well as the breathtaking views of the mesas, especially when you are entering Raton traveling from the north. If I had to think of somewhere else I would like to explore to see a different kind of beauty – an Alaskan cruise with my husband Alan would be a super fun adventure.
